WWII German Bayonet

This bayonet was picked up on the battlefield of France during WWII by my father who served with the US Army 298th Engineer Combat Battalion, Co. B.

I would appreciate it if someone could provide further information about it's use/issue/history and background.

Black checkered plastic handle
Steel scabbard with black leather frog
"Ges. Gesch." in lower right side of blade
