ENO'S FRUIT SALT DERIVATIVE COMPOUND
BOTTLE

Eno's Fruit Salt Derivative Compound

This bottle, about 7" high X 2 3/4" wide, was found in San Diego, California.
Searching the internet, I was able to find two other websites noting similar bottles and where found. One bottle was dug up in Tarpon Springs, Florida, the other found in Canton, Michigan. Having been found in three such widely separated parts of the country I would imagine that this was a very popular product.

THE HONGKONG GOVERNMENT GAZETTE

No. 18 GOVERNMENT NOTIFICATION. It is hereby notified, in accordance with the provisions of Ordinance No. 16 of 1873, that upon the application of James Crossley Eno, by his Solicitor Mr. J.S. Salaman, certain trade marks used by the said James Crossley Eno, in respect to Fruit Salts manufactured by him, and commonly known as "Eno's Fruit Salts," have been registered in this Office.

Colonial Secretary's Office,
Hongkong, 27th January, 1879

The following was kindly provided by Digger Odell:
Jonathan E. Eno, a London chemist for his formula of bicarbonate of soda, tartaric acid and Rochelle Salt. (This is essentially the same ingredients as in Tarrant & Co. Effervescent Seltzer Aperient). Marketing of the Fruit Salt began about 1880. The Fruit Salt was a remedy for upset stomach. It was advertised as being made from sound ripe fruit made into a health-giving, invigorating beverage. Prepared by Eno's Fruit Salt Works, Hatcham, London, S.E. It was imported into this country by E. Fougera Company of New York City.
