Gatlin Kith and Kin

 Gatlin Ancestors

Lazarus & Sally Gatlin

Lazarus GATLIN is my 5th Great Grandfather.   He married Sally (maiden name unknown).  According to D. W.Gatlin he was born about 1740 in Craven Co. N. Carolina. From his Will we know he died July 1808 in Davidson Co. Tennessee.  One source says Sally was born about 1750.  I do not know when or where she died. According to D. W. Gatlin, he and Jesse Gatlin were residing in Dobbs Co. N. Carolina in 1790. He also reports that Lazarus Gatlin was a member of the North Carolina militia and a soldier in The Revolutionary War from North Carolina.  However, I have not found any papers to document this.

The Children of Lazarus & Sally Gatlin are Nathan GATLIN, Lazarus GATLIN, Jr., Charity GATLIN, Jesse GATLIN**my ancestor, Nancy H. GATLIN, William GATLIN, Edmond GATLIN,Thomas G. GATLIN, and Mary "Polly" GATLIN.

Jesse and Polly Gatlin

Jesse Gatlin (son of Lazarus and his wife Sally) & his wife Polly Prescott are my 4th Great Grandparents.  According to D. W. Gatlin, Jesse Gatlin was born in 1769 in Dobbs Co. N. Carolina and married about 1789 in Dobbs Co. N.C., and that Jesse and Lazarus Gatlin were enumerated in the 1790 Dobbs Co. N. C. Census, but "about the year of 1800, Jesse Gatlin and his family, then consisting of himself, wife, and daughters, Esther and Rebecca, removed from their native state of North Carolina and came to live in the newly made state of Tennessee, formerly Western North Carolina."  They probably settled in Davidson Co. TN near his father, Lazarus Gatlin.

According to D. W. Gatlin, "Polly Prescott Gatlin, the first wife of Jesse Gatlin and the mother of their seven children, died while the family was living in Tennessee and died subsequent to the birth of their youngest child, Lucinda, who was born in Tennessee in about 1813.  In about the year 1815 or 1816, Jesse Gatlin and his seven children removed from Tennessee and came to live in Kentucky. They became the founders of the family and the 'House of Gatlin' in Kentucky and in Hopkins Co., Kentucky."  Jesse Gatlin married a second time to Cassy Gibson and they had three children.

He goes on to say that "it is a family legend that the family came to Kentucky in a flatboat. If so, their route would have been down the Cumberland River to the Ohio River, up the Ohio to Pond River, thence up Pond River to Bakersport, which was then in Christian County, Kentucky. It is true, nevertheless, the family established a home in the vicinity of Bakersport where they lived until after the death of Jesse Gatlin, II, in about 1839. The area in which they lived was curtailed from Christian County in 1820 and added to Hopkins County, and the family became resident citizens of Hopkins County, Kentucky, on and after that date."

In regard to Jesse's father and grandfather, in his book, D.W. Gatlin says: "Based upon meager records and childhood memories of what was told me by our paternal grandmother. He was the son of Lazarus Gatlin who was born in Craven County, N.C. in about 1740, and the Grandson of John Gatlin from North Carolina."

At the time D.W. Gatlin wrote this, he did not know about the Will of Lazarus Gatlin written 1808 in Davidson Co. TN that lists Jesse as one of the children and as evidence as to what part of Tennessee they moved after leaving N. Carolina.

According to D.W. Gatlin, "Polly Prescott was the daughter of Aaron Prescott. He was born in North Carolina in 1746, and enlisted as a soldier in the Continental Line in the American Revolution in Captain Lewiss Company, May 20, 1777. He was killed in action November 4, 1777. His father was William Prescott.

The following receipt copied from the archives of North Carolina is self-explanatory:

"RECEIVED the 26th day of September, 1800, from the Secretarys office, A Military Lend Warrant No. 18, for 640 acres of land issued to the Heirs of Aaron Prescott, of this state."

                                Signed:

                                "Jess Gatlin, Husband of
                                Polly Gatlin, an Heir.

We have not been able to locate this military grant of 640 acres of land as to learn the number of heirs of Aaron Prescott. Jesse Gatlin and his wife, Polly Prescott Gatlin, sold and convey the land or their interest therein.

The children of Jesse GATLIN & Polly PRESCOTT are Esther GATLIN, Rebecca GATLIN, Dawson GATLIN, Jesse S. GATLIN, Nathan P.GATLIN, Nancy E. GATLIN, and Lucinda GATLIN.

The children of Jesse GATLIN & Cassy GIBSON are Granville J. GATLIN, Mary "Polly" GATLIN, and Susan A. GATLIN.
