Hanks Family History
My earliest HANKS ancestors originated in Virginia. According to Adin Baber, Hanks Researcher, the first Hanks of record in Virginia was Thomas Hanckes. Some of the HANKS clan moved to North Carolina. John HANKS, Sr. & his wife Mary DAWSON-HANKS left the area of Dobbs Co. North Carolina and moved into middle Tennessee. Sometime later they traveled farther westward into Christian County Kentucky, located in western Kentucky. Later the area where they lived became a part of Hopkins County Kentucky due to restructuring of county boundaries. Evidence supports but does not prove conclusively that John HANKS, Sr. who lived in Christian and Hopkins Cos. Kentucky was the father of Joshua HANKS, b. February 17, 1787, my 3rd Great Grandfather.Joshua HANKS heirs are documented in Hopkins County Kentucky court records. Joshua HANKS married Esther GATLIN, daughter of Jesse GATLIN & Polly PRESCOTT, and Granddaughter of Lazarus GATLIN & Sally, his wife. Information about her heritage can be found in the GATLIN portion of my website. Their daughter, Elizabeth Peak HANKS married Jacob T. Miller. They are 2nd Great Grandparents. My MILLER family and HANKS family lived on adjoining property between White Plains and Nortonville, KY. Click here for more information on my MILLER family.
