 Ogilvie Family History

My earliest known OGILVIE ancestors are William, Sr. and his wife, Bettie Ann (RISKE) OGILVIE.  Their son, William OGILVIE, Jr. b. about 1719, married Mary HARRIS, b. 1735,  the daughter of
Col. Robert, Sr. and Leminder (SMITH?) HARRIS.   William & Mary (HARRIS) OGILVIE married in North Carolina and later moved to Williamson County Tennessee where they lived on their Plantation at College Grove until their deaths.  Mary died in 1807 and William died in 1813.  They are buried in the Ogilvie Family Cemetery at College Grove Tennessee.

The most well-known of my OGILVIE ancestors is Kimbrough Tinsley OGILVIE, Sr. b. 1763, the son of William and Mary (HARRIS) OGILVIE. He married Nancy HARRIS, b. 1764. He fought in the American Revolution, particularly known for fighting in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Kimbrough died in 1842 in Calloway Co. Kentucky. Click here to read a transcript of his Last Will and Testament.

Lemuel Harris OGILVIE, b. 1797, a son of Kimbrough, was my 3rd Great Grandfather.  Lemuel married Martha WINSTEAD, b. 1803, the daughter of John and Mary/Polly (CHAPMAN) WINSTEAD. Lemuel and Martha's son, James Benton OGILVIE, b. 1823, married Henrietta PURDY, b.1844;  they were my 2nd Great Grandparents.

Zelotes Purdy OGILVIE, b.1866, the son of James Benton & Henrietta (PURDY) OGILVIE, married Amanda Emily MILLER, b. 1868; they are my Great Grandparents.  Z.P. Ogilvie was a Baptist minister.  He once delivered the Sunday morning sermon at the church where the family of former President Harry S Truman attended church.  Afterwards, he went home with them and ate Sunday dinner. Z.P. & Amanda lived at the tip of southern Illinois, very near the Ohio River.  They later moved to Charleston, Missouri situated on the Mississippi River across from Kentucky.

They both grew up in Charleston, Missouri where they met. They married 1924 in Poplar Bluff, Butler Co., Missouri.  My Grandfather died Nov. 17, 1973 and my Grandmother died Dec. 1, 1985.  Click hereto see a picture of their grave.  They are buried at the Bloomfield City Cemetery in Bloomfield, MO.

Steven M. Larson  This webpage contains information about the HARRIS Ancestry.  I do not know how much of this information is correct as there is so much erroneous information about the ancestry of Col. Robert HARRIS and his brothers.  Steven traces the HARRIS roots back to England. Other researchers have a somewhat different version of the way the generations descend.
