Notes
for ROBERT KRUPP:
Bob was 21 months older then I (James Howard Krupp). In the early years of
my life, our family was very close to
the Van Lerberghe family. The
Van Lerberghes had lots of kids, twelve to be exact, so there was always
someone your own age to play with, which was important
when you are a child. Henry Van Lerberghe, the patriarch of the
family and Grandma, Alice Hascher, were brother and sister.
The
Van Lerberghe's were in the Funeral Home business. We spent a lot of
time at their home and cottage at Lake St. Clair.
Milton Van Lerberghe was my brother Bob's age. The summer of 1928. Bob
was invited, and given permission, to spend a week
at the Van Lerberghe's cottage. Milton Van Lerberghe had a boat with
an outboard motor. The morning of August
1, 1928. Brother
Bob and
Milton Van Lerberghe went fishing in Lake St. Clair. The Van Lerberghes
also owned a high powered speed boat. . An older brother
of Milton, Ralph, a Detroit City Fireman, with a day off work. Ralph
drove the speed boat out to were Milton and Bob were fishing in Lake St. Clair. Milton could not get the outboard motor started, so
Ralph told the boys he would tow them into shore with
the speed
boat. I guess the speed boat was too powerful for the little out board.
While they were making a sharp turn the outboard capsized.
Milton and Bob were thrown out of the boat. Milton could swim and made it
back to grab a hold of the outboard. Bob could not
swim. Ralph jumped in the water after Bob. Nobody really knows what happened
from there on. Probably Bob grabbed Ralph in such
away
that he was not able to swim. Both Ralph and Bob drowned together.
Henry Van Lerberghe and my mother felt that they died
together and should be buried together. So to answer your question, Robert Krupp is
buried on the Van Lerberghe Plot in Mt.
Olivet Cemetery.
Mother and Dad bought their own plot a few years later and were going to
move Bob. Someone talked my mother out of it.
