+1212 | M | Jan Harmen COERTE
(Harmen
Coerten2,
Coertenn1) was born in 1641 in Voorthuysen,
Gelderland, Holland. He died before 1696 in New Jersey, USA. |
12121 | F | Neeltje
Janse BUYS was the daughter of Jan Cornelis BUYS and Eybetje |
These are the notes I have under the name of his only son Jan Harmens
Coerte
The following notes seem to have come from a combination of sources
"Jan Coerte the only son of Harmen Coerten, was
known in his early years as Jan Harmens, following the customs of
the Dutch, but fortunately for this genealogy, in later years, following
the English custom, he stuck to the family name of Coerten, but he
and the two following generations spelled the name "Coert" or
"Koerte". Jan Coerte, as we have seen, came to
New Netherlands with his father, mother and four other children on the
Ship "De Trouw" on th 12 Feb. 1659. His age at that time
was given as seventeen." The age should have been five according to
and article in the NY Gen Biog Coll, 1925 under an article written
by Harold Randolph, p 267.
"The first mention of him by name is in the Records of New Amsterdam, Court Minutes, Vol. 4 pp 10, 17, 23, 67, and 87 where in an action brought in 1662 by Siex von der Stighelen Vs Jan Jansen the younger, there is a record of a note give to "Jan Corten or Johannes Cortten for 350 gilders." "Other references to a Jan Harmensen are found in the Records of three other actions found in Records of New Amsterdam Court Minutes, Vol 5 p 332, and Vol 6 pp 210, 212, 218, 221, and 304. In Vol 2 Doc Hist. of NY p. 471, the list of his property liable to assessment is given: 20 Sept 1676 as follows: Jan Coerten, Middlewout: 4 poll, 3 hogs and 95 Pounds." "His marriage is recorded in NJ Archives Vol. 22, p. 538."
1671
5 Feb 1671 (NJA-XXX-558). In Guert's will he annuls testament made with his wife Geertje Jacobs Duenaers who he married on 15 Jan. 1657. because she had been unfaithful to him. He, also, annuls testament of March 24, 1664.
"In his will he mentions Pieter Hesselse, the son of his
sister;
Thomas Jurianses, oldest son of Ryckje Hermans (his niece); Henricksen Smack, oldest son of Guertje Harmens, his brother's daughter Jan Harmensen, his brother's son; and makes his universal heir his brother Harem Coerten."

Guertje Harmens, his brother's daughter, Jan Harmensen,
brother's son, Christyntje Claes, dau. of Claes Christiansen,
universal heir brother Harmen Coerten.
We next here of him in the neighborhood of Hackensack and
Aquackenock, NJ where he probably located soon after the death of his
uncle and father. The records of the Hackensack Dutch Ref Church
commence with the date of 1686. Under the date 26 Jan 1686 they
contain the entry of the baptism of Jan son of Jan Koerte
and Neeltie Beus. (Holland Soc. Yearbook, Hackensack
Records)."
"Jan Coerte died before 1696, as appears from the entry of the marriage of his widow, the record of which also appears in the record of the same church, as follows: married 25 March 1699 Diaque Vigoor, widower of Catryn Pisiaer and Neeltie Buys, widow of Jan Koerte. (Holland Soc Yearbook, Hackensack Records and NY Gen and Biol Rec. Vol 7 p. 134." Children The Hackensack DRC p 74 give the name of a child named Jan. The Bergen records p 155, 235 give the names of two girls with the name Aertje.
Greener states the names of children as Jan, Harme and Guert.
The NY Geol and Biog Coll, July, 1977 p 157 lists him as one of the people requesting a minister for the Township of Acquackanonk and New Barbadoes, Essex County, NJ on 14 March 1693.
Jan Harmens Courter had two sons including the following Jan
Courter.

and Harme Coerte
1715 He was a sponsor of a child at the Hackensack Dutch Ref
Church on 8 Jan 1715. The child's name is Trinte, daughter
of Jan Van Scuyven and Geertie Marus. Witnesses were
Harme Koerten and Trintie, his wife.
1744 His wife died 10 Aug 1744. (Holland Soc. Yearbook for 1899) 1749 In the Minutes of Common Council, NYC Vol 5, p 280 there is an entry of a resolution on 23 Nov 1749, directing payment to Harme Courten of Four Pounds for two boat loads of stone containing eight cartloads, delivered at the ferry for the use of the corporation. Information on his death is recorded in the NY Dutch Ref Church. (Holland Society Year Book for 1890).
From these two sons all Courters descend but the only way to
prove this is thru dna test of male Courter line.
