John
OSGOOD (John4,
Robert3, Peter2, Peter of Nether

was
born about 1630 in England. He married 15 November
1653 in Haverhill, Massachusetts to Mary CLEMENTS. John
lived in Andover in the house his father left him and
where the first recorded town meeting was held in March
1656. He was Captain of the Militia, often selectman,
representative in 1668-9, 1689 and 1690 and as he had been
imprisoned for 9-10 days by Sir Edmund Andros without
warrant, during the opposition to his imposition of
taxes in August or September 1687, John
OSGOOD was very popular among the townspeople of Andover.
John died 31 August 1693 in Andover, Massachusetts. |

2002 message from above Garry:
Nicholas HOOKER may have been a son of Peter HOOKER who is
mentioned in the 1636 PCC will of another Peter HOOKER of London
Tallow Chandler. The testator mentions his Aunt Stroud, Uncle
Eger, his cousins Ann HOOKER and Richard HOOKER ("my uncle
Richard's children"), Henry HOOKER ("my uncle Peter's
son") and his brother Nicholas and sister Sibell (acc to
IGI born circa 1590 at Odiham Hants, possibly married Philip
WHITE 1611 at Hants) and the testator's brothers John and Edward
with the former's son John. It is apparent from the PCC wills of
Colonel Edward HOOKER (brother of above Richard and Peter?) of
St Mary at Hill London (will 1650 proved 1651), Ralph HOOKER of
Barbadoes (will 1663 proved 1665), John HOOKER of St Giles in
the Fields Mdx Tallow Chandler (will 1673 proved 1674) and
Edward HOOKER of Winchester gent (will 1736 proved 1737), that
this London family had Hampshire links- which is reinforced by
the Hants Peculiar Court wills of EDWARD HOOKER OF CHILCOMB gent
(will 1680 proved 1681) and Edward HOOKER of Easton gent (will
1709 proved 1732/3).
Nicholas HOOKER also is a common Hooker name in Hants with Hants
Consistory Court wills for a Nicholas HOKER of Winchester being
proved in 1509, for Rev Nicholas Hoker vicar of Twyford being
proved in 1545, for Nicholas Hoker of Bolington being proved in
1566, for Nicholas HOOKER of Halliborne being proved in 1593,
for Nicholas HOOKER of East Stratton being proved in 1597, for
Nicholas HOOKER of Redbridge gent being proved in 1628 and for
Nicholas HOOKER of Basingstoke being proved in 1704.
There also are acknowledged New World links in the wills of this
extended family. For example EWARD HOOKER of Chilcomb refers to
his daughters Ellen BAMAN [Beaman?], Mary OSGOOD and Elizabeth
BAKER. His son Edward refers to his sister Mary OSGOOD of "Anndover
in New England". John HOOKER Tallow Chandler refers in his
1673 will to John HOOKER the elder of Barbadoes, Elianor BENNETT
of Andover and Mary OSGOOD of New England. Ralph HOOKER of
Barbadoes mentions his young cousin (" my own sister's
son") Peter BENNETT son of Richard BENNETT of New England
(said to have been at Salem 1636, later at Boston and to have
died 1677) and his cousin John HOOKER "now residing in
Barbadoes".
Nicholas HOOKER, the father of Elizabeth who married Richard
HERNE in 1613, is referred to in the marriage allegation as of
St Matthew Friday St, goldsmith. There do seem to have been a
number of Hooker families based in that parish - Agnes HOOKER
married William ALLEN there in 1592 while a Mary HOOKER married
Edward HUCHINGS there in 1601.A Richard HOOKER son of Richard
was christened there in 1600, Nicholas HOOKER (brother of
Elizabeth who married Richard HERNE?) son of Nicholas in 1605
and William HOOKER (who may be the future Lord Mayor of London
1673-4) son of William in 1612.
According to Vivian's Visitations of Cornwall p 269, Dorothy
KILLIGREW (sister of Sir John, Sir Peter and Sir William
KILLIGREW) married a Hooker (no christian name given) goldsmith
of London. This possibly may be Nicholas HOOKER who seemingly
was a wealthy man and of a similar social standing. In 1616
"Nicholas Hooker citizen and goldsmith of London and
Richard Herne citizen and merchant taylor of London' sold the
manors of "Bleesbie, Gibbesmere and Gorton to Lady Frances
Pierrepont widow of Robert Pierrepont and Robert Pierrepont of
Holme Pierrepont" for 3200 pounds ( a huge sum for that
period which was payable to Hooker) - Portland Papers,
University of Nottingham. I understand that a branch of the
Pierreponts later migrated to New England where one of them
married Mary HOOKER daugh of Rev Thomas HOOKER.
The Calendar of State Papers (Domestic) also has a number of
Killigrew/Hooker links. For example in 1655 reference is made to
a licence issued to Lt Henry HOOKER (son of Peter?) and Capt
Richard HOOKER (son of Richard who was dead by 1650?) -
"officers under the State of Holland"- to export two
geldings from London to Holland at the request of Sir Peter
KILLIGREW.In 1662 a commission was issued to Harry HOOKER
(possibly the above Henry) to be a captain in Sir William
KILLIGREW's regiment.

first Edward is will 1681; second Edward is...?
"Edward of Chilcomb seems to have been a member of the
sequestration committee for Hampshire - refer to National
Archives website, London. As such, he must have been a prominent
Puritan, only Puritans being appointed by Parliament to those
positions. His son Edward (or grandson) according to the
National Archives website was Receiver General and Sheriff of
Hampshire (Southhampton?) - again emphasising the family's local
importance.."

She
often quoted to Duane:
"Freeze belly like ice wagon and die sneezin'." or "Why
don't you put a quarter
in your shoe and just go."
In
order for her to get a Social Security number, Clara had to
get a letter
from her oldest sister to verify Clara was her sister and
that she (Clara)
was born in 1905.
Also,
Clara's father, challenged the family to find a word in the
dictionary that he could not spell.
Although
they tried, they could not.
