RITES
FRIDAY SET FOR MRS. PHILLIPS, 64 Services for Mrs. Hattie
Phillips, 64, who died early Wednesday morning, will be conducted at
the McCullough chapel at 3 p.m. Friday, by the Rev. A. English, and burial
will be in Riverview. Mrs.
Phillips had been bedfast since Christmas, and in failing health for two
years. Mrs. Phillips was born
May 18, 1875, at Williams, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. J.M.Houghtaling,
and was brought here by her parents when she was 17.
She had lived here ever since.
On November 23, 1895, she was married to James M. Phillips, who
died in 1937. Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Methodist Church and of the
Yeoman Order. Survivors are two
sons: Harry and Forest L.; a sister, Mrs. Geo. Wille; and two
granddaughter Irmadee and Donna Jean , all of Algona.
Two brothers and five sisters are dead. I also found this
excerpt of interest when I was looking for James Obit. Mrs. Hattie Phillips,
of the Elite millinery shop, is having a two week vacation, which she is
spending with her sister, Mrs. E. A. Ecklund, Minneapolis and Mrs. Jessie
Witwer, Mason City. At
Minneapolis she will attend market week and do purchasing for the fall
trade at the Elite shop. Mrs.
Fred Pooch is in charge here during Mrs. Phillips’ absence, Mrs.
Phillips has been manager of the shop for the last six months during the
absence of the owner, Mrs. Ann Fechner, whose health is not good. (Summer 1937)

PHILLIPS, 69, PASSES SATURDAY; VICTIM
OF CANCER James
M. Phillips, one of Algona’s pioneers, died at the Kossuth hospital
Saturday, following a short sickness with cancer.
He was down town, seemingly in as good health as usual only a week
before his death. Funeral
services were held at the Laird & McCullough chapel Monday afternoon
at 2:30, with Rev. A. English in charge, and burial was made in Riverview
cemetery. Mr.
Phillips was born in Algona, August 31, 1867, and died at the age of 69
years, 11 months, and 14 days. He
was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. George M. Phillips.
Besides his parents, one sister is dead. Marriage
to Hattie Viola Houghtaling took place November 23, 1895, at Algona, and
two sons were born: Harry J. at home, and Forrest LeRoy, Alma, Wisconsin. Besides
the immediate family, Mr. Phillips is survived by six half-sisters and on
half-brother, Mrs. Ethel Tillinghast, Mrs. Gertrude Nelson, Mrs. L.
Stebbins, all of Algona; Mrs. Myrtle Calver, Fort Dodge; Mrs. Emma
Kirkpatrick and Mrs. Grace Shearer, Council Bluffs; and Mrs. Edward
Schick, Carroll. There are
two grandchildren, Irma Dee and Donna Jeane Phillips. Mr.
Phillips was a member of the local Methodist Church and was affiliated
with the Modern Woodmen.
