6th September 2003

Everyone who came signed the Register of those attending, so we have a permanent record of these pioneers, most of whom were 'caught' by Rose-Marie who ably ran the Prize Raffle.
We chatted about this and that, poring over various K/NIBB/S research material. The database on my Atari attracted a fair amount of attention, not least the old mono monitor that I transported instead of bringing my colour one. Another blast from the past was a banner that I had run off on fan folded paper. It just read K/NIBB/S One Name Study but was made up of a composite string 'Warwick 2001' typeset. Of course, no one believed that I had laboriously typed out each letter to produce such an effect.
Sioux FENNESSY also decorated large areas of the walls with her trees and photographs. The one of 'dead' uncle Herbert some remarked bore a distinct likeness to Don KNIBBS.
| "Don KNIBBS" | ||
| Don acted as our official 'digital' photographer for the day and did a splendid job but we forgot to ask him to turn the camera on himself. So here's one of him, relaxing at home, after the event. | ![]() |
His event photos appear below for all to see. Robin KNIBB most unfortunately missed the group photo but appears elsewhere - see thumbnails. |
Muriel BOLTON had put together a timeline of early K/NIBB/S which proved to be of great interest. Chris RILEY, whose inspiration it was to hold a meeting, brought several items of interest relating to his family.
Another large tree was displayed by Rose-Marie HARRISON nee KNIBB. John KNIBBS of Market Harborough, seeing this, charged me with finding a link with his tree.
Chatting with Lesley MORGAN about her KNIBBS roots who should be with us but Alan DAVIS. By sheer coincidence, both families had KNIBBS at Hethe - unconnected so far. I learned that the place is pronounced 'Heath' and later that the first syllable of 'Pytchley' is resonant of apple 'pie'.
And talking about food, the dishes brought by all who came created quite a spread as can be seen in some photographs.
After lunch, Bob KNIBBS hosted a session on Microsoft's 'Access' program which comes as part of their Office Suite. Bob showed us how to create a new fully searchable database, adding categories as required. He then demonstrated the Query features of Access and all were impressed how that operates after new information is entered into the database. He demonstrated the versatility of the program for manipulating the issued K/NIBB/S IGI and GRO Births data 1837-1900. If you would like a copy of the Tutorial Sheet prepared for this, just let me know and I'll send it to you. Another feature of Access, Bob explained, is that if data in one column is sorted then the linked data in other columns is automatically sorted with it. This doesn't happen in Excel.
Richard KNIBBS had loaned us for the day his copy of The World Book of KNIBBS and many were seen to be searching through it for long lost relatives no doubt. Ana KNIBBS RIZZO had sent some photographs over the internet and these were displayed for all to see.
The threatened compulsory exposing of K/NIBB/S feet did not occur, but some (out of my sight, I stress) voluntarily shed shoe and sock to reveal their second toe as long, if not longer, than their big one! This for the benefit of Ana who first reported the trait in her line. She wondered if this is common throughout the K/NIBB/S line. Whereas there is clearly some supporting evidence, until we know the percentage in the population as a whole, the jury is still out on this one!
On a more serious note, we did wonder if it was worth our exploring the facilites now available for genealogical DNA testing, such as that carried out into the SYKES family using the male Y chromosome. A couple of researchers showed interest and we can perhaps pursue this further via the mailing list. We could appoint a sub-group to investigate further and report on their findings. Volunteers please.
Others indicated that they might br prepared to undertake some tasks in connection with the 2nd International Gathering to be held at Kettering in September 2003.
Percy KNIBBS, Bob's father, regaled us with some KNIBBS memories. Audrey VENABLES didn't succeed in finding any links but we shall not let her stand isolated for long. Nor Richard HANDS.
There were more amazing coincidences that came to light. Alex's father Harold worked at Cadbury's in Birmingham for 21 years and also working there was another KNIBBS who it turns out was the grandfather of Chris RILEY's wife. Harold married miles away in Braintree, Essex at the very church where Chris PIERCE now worships.
The Raffle Prize, a bottle of champagne, was won by Bob KNIBBS and Chris PIERCE received a small prize as her ticket was second out of the jug, procured for the purpose by Rose-Marie. Lesley Morgan who lives in America, and had travelled the farthest to be with us, made the draw.
A vote of thanks was given by Rose-Marie to me and Michèle, who appreciated all the help she received in the kitchen, particularly from Sioux's contingent.
So was it a success? From my point of view, the event was everything I hoped it would be and I just regret not having had enough time to talk to everyone for as long as I would have liked. We'll have to organise a whole weekend for Kettering!
