James
Frederick Vantrease was born in 1776 in Pennsylvania. He was the son of Johann
Frederick VanTrease, Sr. & Keziah.
Elizabeth was born about 1775
in Maryland. She was the daughter of Unknown Parents. Maiden names listed
for Elizabeth on online trees and from other researchers include Thomas, Simpson,
Hunt, Barkhone and a maiden name for Elizabeth's mother is listed as Toole.
Also Frederick and Elizabeth named their only son Silas Squire Asbury Vantrease.
On the 1800 census of Mason Co., Kentucky, families listed include several Thomas
families, two Tuel families, and an Asbury family. I do not find the other names
there in 1800, but there was a Simmons and a Hunter family listed.
THE FAMILY OF JAMES FREDERICK VANTREASE & ELIZABETH
James Frederick Van Trease & Elizabeth | James
Frederick Vantrease & Elizabeth (maiden name?) were married between 1799-1801,
possibly in Bedford Co., PA but probably in Mason Co., KY. Both James Frederick
& Johann Frederick went by the name Frederick, and both lived in Fleming Co.,
KY, so to try to avoid confusion in this writing I will refer to Johann Frederick
as Frederick Sr and to James Frederick as Frederick Jr. There is a Frederick Ventrece
on the 1800 tax lists for Mason Co., KY that is probably Frederick Sr. Frederick
Jr & Elizabeth settled in Fleming Co., KY by 1810, probably as early as 1803
when Frederick Sr bought land there. Frederick Sr & Frederick Jr are both
listed on the 1810 census of Flemingsberg, Fleming Co., KY under the name Frederick
Vantrees(e). On Sept. 10, 1812, Frederick Sr conveyed 40 acres of land in Fleming
Co., KY to Frederick Jr. Frederick Sr died in 1817, and the land he owned in Fleming
Co., KY was inherited in equal parts by the 5 children named in his will, including
Frederick Jr. Frederick (Jr) Vantrees is listed as a head of household on the
1820 census of Fleming Co., KY. On Sept 9, 1929, three of the other children of
Frederick Sr (Elizabeth, Emmanuel & Rachel) sold the land they had inherited
from their father to their brother Frederick Jr. There is a Frederick Vantrese
listed on the 1830 census of Western Division, Fleming Co., KY who is probably
Frederick Jr - ages are correct for his children, but not for Frederick Jr or
Elizabeth. They are listed on the same page as Barnet Lamar, Lawrence Dye &
Eli Hinton, all of whom were married to daughters of Frederick Jr. In Sept 1834
the land deed of 1929 to Frederick from his siblings was reaffirmed in court.
On February 22, 1836, Frederick Jr paid $90 to Matilda Hinton for her "undivided
interest" in belonging to "her Father Frederick Vantreese (Sr) deceased
conveyed to him by deed bearing the date 24th September 1803 from Peter Hysong
and wife containing 63 1/2 acres". On December 22, 1836, Frederick Jr is
listed as being deceased in a land record, and son-in-law Lawrence Dye paid money
to daughters Keziah and Lucinda for their share of his land. James Frederick
Van Trease died in between February to December 1836 in Fleming Co., KY. Elizabeth
Van Trease emigrated from Kentucky to Illinois, probably in 1841 with several
of her married children. She is listed at age 75 on the census of District No.
21, Vermilion Co., IL living next door to her married granddaughter Elizabeth
(Mrs. David) Sconce. She has 2 young Vantrease children living with her in 1850,
who are children of her son Squire "Silas" VanTrease from his first
marriage. Elizabeth (maiden name?) Van Trease died on August 5, 1851, probably
in Vermilion Co., Illinois. Notes for James Frederick Van Trease Fleming Co., KY Vantrease land records |
The Children of James Frederick Van Trease & Elizabeth
Keziah VanTrease | Keziah VanTrease was born on
August 18, 1801 in Fleming Co., KY according to funeral records, although census
records indicate a birthyear of 1803. Her father is on 1800 tax lists in Mason
Co., KY and he bought land in Fleming Co., KY in 1803. There is a female under
age 10 who is probably Keziah, age 8, in the household of Fredrick Vantreese on
the 1810 census of Flemingsberg, Fleming Co., KY. There is a female the right
age group to be Keziah, age 18, in the household of Fredr. Vantreese on the 1820
census of Flemingsberg, Fleming Co., KY. Kesiah married Elijah Lamar about
1822, probably in Fleming Co., KY although I have not found a marriage record
for them there at this time. I also have not been able to find the family on the
1830 or 1840 census indexes, which is puzzling. Elijah & Keziah had 10 children,
all born between 1823 to 1846 in KY according to all later census records I have
found. Elijah & Keziah (age 47) are listed with their family on the 1850 census
of District 1, Fleming Co., KY. They are listed on the 1860 census of District
2 (Post Office Flemingsburg), Fleming Co., KY (Keziah, age 58). They are listed
on the 1870 census of Mt. Carmell, Fleming Co., KY (Keziah, age 67). Some online
trees list Elijah as dying in 1870, but I find both Elijah & Keziah on the
1880 census of Mt. Carmel, Fleming Co., KY, living next door to their married
son Frederick Lamar. at that time Elijah is listed as being age 79 and Keziah
is listed as being age 75. Keziah Van Trease Lamar died on April 30, 1893 in
Vermilion Co., IL. She is buried in the Georgetown Cemetery, Georgetown, Vermilion
Co., IL. Notes for Keziah VanTrease Lamar
Nancy Vantreese | Nancy
VanTrease was born between 1800-1803, in Mason or Fleming Co., Kentucky. There
is a female under age 10 who is probably Nancy, age 7-9, age 3, in the household
of Fredrick Vantreese on the 1810 census of Flemingsberg, Fleming Co., KY. There
is a female the right age group to be Margaret, age 13, in the household of Fredr.
Vantreese on the 1820 census of Flemingsberg, Fleming Co., KY. Notes for Nancy VanTrease Judd
Margaret VanTrease | Margaret VanTrease was born on February 19, 1807
in Fleming Co., KY. There is a female the right age group to be Margaret,
age 3, in the household of Fredrick Vantreese on the 1810 census of Flemingsberg,
Fleming Co., KY. There is a female the right age group to be Margaret, age 13,
in the household of Fredr. Vantreese on the 1820 census of Flemingsberg, Fleming
Co., KY. Margaret married Barnett Lamar, probably about 1825 in Fleming
Co., KY although I do not have documentation for that at this time (An IGI on
www.familysearch.org states that the marriage was in 1830, but as their first
know child was born about 1826 I don't think that is correct.) Barnett & Margaret
had 10, and possibly 11, children. They are listed on the 1830 census of Western
Division, Fleming Co., KY, living next door to the household of Lawrence Dye.
At that time they had 2 daughters under age 10 in the household. They are listed
on the 1840 census of Divison 1, Fleming Co., KY, living next door to the household
of Mary Ann Dye. At that time they had 8 children and owned 2 slaves. Based on
birthplaces of their children, they moved from Kentucky to Illinois in 1841, probably
at the same time as Lawrence & Mary Ann (VanTrease) Dye. They are listed on
the 1850 census of Georgetown, Vermilion Co., IL. Barnett died on November 1,
1856 in Georgetown, Vermilion Co., IL, and Margaret is listed as head of household
on the 1860 census of Georgetown, Vermilion Co., IL. I have not found her on the
1870 census, but she is listed as widowed, age 73, on the 1880 census of Georgetown,
Vermilion Co., IL. Margaret Van Trease Lamar died on July 25, 1888 in Georgetown,
Vermilion Co., IL. Barnett & Margaret are both buried in the Georgetown
Cemetery, Georgetown, Vermilion Co., IL Notes for Margaret VanTrease Lamar
Mary Ann VanTrease | Mary Ann VanTrease was born on November
21, 1809 in Fleming Co., KY. There is a female the right age group to be Mary
Ann, age 1, in the household of Fredrick Vantreese on the 1810 census of Flemingsberg,
Fleming Co., KY. There is a female the right age group to be Mary Ann, age 11,
in the household of Fredr. Vantreese on the 1820 census of Flemingsberg, Fleming
Co., KY. There is a Fleming Co., KY marriage bond for Mary Ann and Lawrence
Dye dated Jan. 20, 1825, and their first child was born April 4, 1825. Lawrence
& Mary Ann had at least 9 children. The family is listed on the 1830 census
of Fleming Co., KY. Lawrence fell into debt about 1837 and went to South Carolina
& Georgia between 1837-1841 to earn some money. On the 1840 census, Mary Ann
is listed as the head of household with the children. While Lawrence was gone
the court awarded his property to his debtors, and when he returned the family
emigrated in 1841 to Vermilion Co., IL. The family is listed on the 1850, 1855
& 1860 censuses of Vermilion Co., IL. IN 1850 they are listed in District
21, and in 1860 they are listed in Elwood Twp. In July of 1862, Lawrence enlisted
on the Union side in the Civil War, and he is described on military papers as
being 56 years old, 5"7" tall, with black hair and black eyes. His occupation
was Farmer. The tours of duty were hard on Lawrence, and he became ill and was
discharged on January 28, 1863 at Nashville, TN. According to pension papers,
Lawrence contracted "camp diarrhea" in the service, and spent the later
years of his life in poverty and never fully recovered. Mary Ann VanTrease
Dye died on January 29, 1865 in Vermilion Co., IL. She is buried in Mt. Pisgah
cemetery, Georgetown, Vermilion Co., IL. Lawrence is listed on the 1870 census
of Elwood Twp., age 63 and living alone. He remarried in 1871 to Delilah Mills
Creitzer. Lawrence died on September 7, 1879, and was buried September 8,
1879 at Mt. Pisgah cemetery, Georgetown, Vermilion Co., IL. Son-in-law David Sconce
was appointed guardian of his minor children from his second marriage after his
death. The Family of Lawrence Dye & Mary Ann Van Trease Notes for Mary Ann Van Trease Records for Lawrence Dye
Silas Squire Asbury VanTrease | Silas Squire Asbury
VanTrease was born about 1811 in Fleming Co., Kentucky. He is not listed as
a child of this family in the book by Robert Van Trees, but census records indicate
that there was a son in this family born at that time. There is a male the right
age group to be Silas, age 5-9, in the household of Fredr. Vantreese on the 1820
census of Flemingsberg, Fleming Co., KY. There is a male the right age to Silas,
age 15-19 in the household of Frederick Vantrese on the 1830 census of Western
Division, Fleming Co., KY. Silas married Sarah Baum on January 29, 1832,
probably in Fleming Co., Kentucky, and they had 4 children. His father died in
1837, and I have not found his widowed mother on the 1840 census at this time.
Several of the grown children of James Frederick emigrated from Fleming Co., KY
to Vermilion Co., IL, and I believe that Silas went there also. His son Henry
was born about 1839 in IL, which would indicate that Silas emigrated from Fleming
Co., KY to Illinois as early as 1839, and may be why I don't find him or his mother
Elizabeth in Fleming Co., KY in 1840. If Silas had settled in Illinois by 1839,
it also may be why Lawrence & Mary Ann (VanTrease) Dye and Francis & Susan
(VanTrease) Williams went to Vermilion Co., IL when they left Fleming Co., KY
in 1841. Silas was married second Lucinda Clark on August 14, 1847, and
they had at least one daughter. Silas and Lucinda are listed on the 1850 census
of Washington, Hendricks, Indiana, with one of his children from his first marriage
and their daughter. Two of his other children are living with his widowed mother
Elizabeth on the 1850 census of District No. 21 Vermilion Co., IL. Silas was married
third to Catharine Spencer on April 10, 1852 in Rush Co., Indiana, and
they had 11 children, including twins Ava Ada and Ada Ava. The family is listed
on the 1860 census of Willow Hill, Jasper, Illinois. They are listed on the 1880
census of Bowling Green, Clay, Indiana. They moved from Indiana to Kansas sometime
between 1881-1885, and they are listed on the 1885 state census of Trenton, Edwards,
Kansas. They moved from Kansas to Oklahoma sometime between 1886-1890, and they
are listed on the 1890 state census of Twp 18, Kingfisher, Oklahoma. Silas
Squire Asbury VanTrease died on November 27, 1899 in Hennessey, Kingfisher, Oklahoma.

Lucinda VanTrease | Lucinda
Van Trease was born on August 08, 1812 in Fleming Co., Kentucky. There is
a female under age 10 who is probably Lucinda, age 8, in the household of Frederick
Vantreese on the 1820 census of Fleming Co., Kentucky. Elizabeth married Eli
R. Hinton about 1830 in Kentucky, and they had 10 children. The household
is listed on the 1830 census of Fleming Co., Kentucky, with a wife age 15-19 who
is probably Lucinda, age 18. Lucinda's father died in 1836, and there is a document
dated December 22, 1836 where Lucinda's brother-in-law Lawrence Dye pays her and
her sister Kesiah for their share of the land they inherited from their father,
Frederick Vantreese Jr. Eli Hinton moved with his family moved from Kentucky to
Illinois between 1840-1845, probably in 1841 when Lawrence & Mary Ann Vantrease
Dye moved there. Pape Mortuary records list children born 1842-1854 as having
parents Eli Hinton and Lucinda Vantreese. Eli & Lucinda are listed on the
1850 census of District 21, Vermilion Co., Illinois, the 1855 census of Georgetown,
Vermilion, Illinois, the 1860 census of Carroll, Vermilion, Illinois and the 1865
census of Vance, Vermilion, Illinois.. Lucinda VanTrease Hinton died on January
04, 1866 and Eli was married second to a woman named Mary. They are listed on
the 1870 census of Vance, Vermilion, Illinois. Eli R. Hinton died on June 01,
1876, both in Vermilion Co., Illinois. Eli and Lucinda are both buried in Greenview
Cemetery, Fairmount, Vermilion, Illinois Notes for Lucinda VanTrease
Susannah VanTrease | Susannah VanTrease was born
in April 1819, probably in Fleming Co., Kentucky, although her daughter Drusilla's
1931 death certificate states that Susannah was born in Maysville, Mason, Kentucky.
She is listed as Susannah in the book by Robert Van Trees, and listed as Susan
in most of the records I have found for her. There is a female the right age group
to be Susan, age 2, in the household of Fredr. Vantreese on the 1820 census of
Flemingsberg, Fleming Co., KY. There is a female the right age to be Susan, age
12 in the household of Frederick Vantrese on the 1830 census of Western Division,
Fleming Co., KY. Her father died in 1837. There is a Kentucky marriage bond for
Francis "Frank" Williams & Susan Vantreese dated February
08, 1837 - it does nto list the county, but Susan's family, bondsman Samuel Fitzgerald,
and several Williams families were listed in Fleming Co., KY in 1830, and Francis
& Susan are living in Division 3, Fleming Co., KY in 1840. At the time of
their marriage, Francis was age 38 and Susan was age 19. Francis & Susan had
8 children. Based on birthplaces of their children, they were in Kentucky in 1838
& 1841, but had moved from Kentucky to Illinois by 1843. The family is listed
on the 1850 census of District 21, Vermilion Co., IL, living next door to Ellis
Hinton, who was also from Fleming/Mason Co., KY area. Frank & Susan Williams
are listed on the 1860 census of Georgetown, Vermilion Co., IL. At that time Frank
was age 60 and Susan was age 41. Francis died between 1860-1870, probably in Vermilion
Co., IL. Susan is listed as head of household and widowed on the 1870 census of
Georgetown, Vermilion Co., IL. Susan moved from Illinois to Indiana, and she is
listed on the 1880 census of Vermillion, Vermillion Co., Indiana. The family returned
to Illinois, and Susanah Williams is listed as head of household on the 1900 census
of Elwood, Vermilion, Illinois with her daughter Drusilla and Drusilla's daughter
Bertha.. Susannah VanTrease Williams died sometime after 1900, and probably
before 1910 in Vermilion Co., Illinois. Notes for Susannah Vantreese Williams Marriage bond for Francis Williams & Susan Vantreese |
