Gilbert Surprised By Death of Ignatz Kramer
Local residents were shocked yesterday by the sudden death of a well-known old resident of Gilbert, Mr. Ignatz Kramer, 50, who passed away at the More Hospital in Eveleth. He died at 11:00 in the morning from complications after an operation.
He was brought to the Eveleth hospital last week, and was there only a week. The sudden death was a surprise to his many friends and neighbors in the community because he was known as one of the strongest men in town.
Kramer was born in Jugoslavia on June 2, 1892. He is survived by his wife Pauline, and one son Ignatz. The Rosary will be said at the home at 8:30 on Friday, and the funeral will be conducted at the home at 8:30 on Saturday, and from the St. Joseph's Catholic church at 9:00. Rev. Fr. F. G. Schweiger will officiate. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery here.

Comment: This is my paternal grandfather, and he lived in this town for 30 yrs. His last name is still spelled wrong! Although it shows the barest minimum of survivors, it does have a personal perspective into how he was viewed in the town. Did you notice that at 50 years of age, he is considered an "old resident?"

Obit 2 from a town nearby newspaper:

Obituary--Virginia Daily Enterprise, Thursday, Dec. 24, 1942 (MN Historical Society Research Ctr)

Ignatz Kramar Dies After Brief Illness
Gilbert--Ignatz Kramar, 50, a resident of Gilbert for the last 30 years, died Wednesday morning at an Eveleth hospital after a brief illness. A member of the American Fraternal Union, he was born June 2, 1892, in Yugoslavia.
He is survived by his widow, Apolonia; one son, Ignatz, Jr., Gilbert; his father, Ignatz, Yugoslavia; four sisters, Mrs. Anton Kramer, Gilbert, and three sisters and a brother in Yugoslavia.
The body will be taken from the Graham funeral home at Eveleth to the residence Friday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock. Recitation of the rosary has been arranged for Friday evening at 8 o'clock at the home. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 8:30 o'clock from the home and at 9 o'clock from the St. Joseph Catholic church with the Rev. Fr. Francis G. Schweiger officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary cemetery at Gilbert.

Comment: The name is spelled correctly this time, and look at the survivors in this one! The only problem with them is there are too many sisters! According to parish records, there were only two daughters in this family. Perhaps the other is a close sister-in-law?

What a terrific feeling one gets when a specific birthdate is given in an obituary! Of course, since it is not a primary document for that event, more investigation would be needed. In this case, it was just one of many different birthdates I have accumulated for my grandfather.
