A majority of the Alsatian potters emigrated to Rothenfels during Le Grende Fuite "The Great Escape" in December 1793 (during the French Revolution) and returned between 1796 and 1798. Francois Joseph also fled to Rothenfels in 1798, but appears to have returned before 1800. An internet search yielded some evidence that he built his residence in Oberbetschdorf in 1800. The inscription has been confirmed, though the internet translation from the evidence earlier mentioned is incorrect in some respects (again, I have Victor Schmitter to thank for the correct translation and valuable context: "Vieille rue" translates into old street - there is nothing about a woman; the translation of "potier de grs" is stoneware potter - Betschdorf potters work with clay and not with a rock like sandstone that was used to build the Strasbourg cathedral - in French there is only the one word "grs" for two different materials - just as in English, the German language has also two words, "Steinzeug" for the pottery and "Sandstein" for the rock). Mr. Schmitter has also provided me with a picture of the residence, which is still standing and apparently in good repair. Francois was also present for the birth of his son, Sebastian, in 1804.

He and his brother, Balthasar, married sisters. Balthasar's wife is Anna Catherina Oberle. He lived in Betschdorf as a potter and an inn-keeper.
