18 Sep 1866 Groves, Eliza Colton was defendant in a divorce in Adams County, box C-64, case 1829. Listed as complainant was Groves, John, father, Groves, Peter W. and LOVER, Groves, James. (Colton should be Courtney.)

09 Oct 1870 Liberty Courtney m Mary E. Phillips Adams County IL
(In 1880 Census Liberty's wife's name is Elizabeth,
did Mary E. go by Elizabeth?) Answer is yes!!!
The disability and widows pension records
for Liberty Courtney indicate that Mary E. Phillips was Mary Elizabeth
Leapley Griffin Phillips who was married to Nimrod H. Phillips in Pike
County, IL. There are depositions in the records that indicate that
Mary E. Phillips and Nimrod H. Phillips never were legally divorced.
Nimrod remarried on 29 Jun 1869 in Adams County, IL to Mrs. Matilda Topper.
Per Nimrod's testimony he and Mary E. Leapley Griffin were married in Oct.
1867 n Pike County, IL and separated in May 1868. Per Mary Elizabeth's
testimony she remembered that he went to Texas and that she had received
divorce papers from Texas. She was unable to read and write and her
father read them to her. She could not find the papers to support
that she was divorced and therefore her request for the pension of Liberty
Courtney was denied after several years of petitioning. There are
158 pages of photocopies that I have received from NARA (National Archives
Records Administration). Some of the depositions are signed by Eliza
Ward, Luthada Price, Robert Cline and William Ward the daughters and son-in-laws
of Liberty. In these papers they indicate that Liberty's last wife
before Mary E. Phillips died 10 Sep. 1868. So
what about the marriages to Minnie Welch and Phoebe L. Jones. But
their depositions also indicate that Liberty and Mary E. Phillips married
in Oct. 1868 after his last wifes death. Seems they are off about
2 years in their recollection of events from the 1860's during their 1889
and 1890 depositions.

5 May 1897 Jacob Valentine 70 year old male, buried in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Hannibal, died from Kidney Disease (If this were the father of Arthur Valentine, Matilda must never have consummated the marriage or divorced him prior to 1891 in Missouri)
10 Feb 1899 Mrs. Matilda Purvis m. William Lantis, Adams County IL License 11805. (Marriage certificate states it is the groom's second marriage and the bride's third marriage. Bride's maiden name is Matilda Courtney and her parents are Liberty Courtney and Eliza Taylor. Both the bride and the groom were from Camp Point, Adams County, IL. Witnesses to the marriage were Fred Clark and Harry Castle. At the time of Matilda's death she was still Matilda Lantis. This is where we get the basis for back-tracking her identity)

QUESTIONS TO ANSWER
Where was Louthailia in 1870?
1870 Census, Liberty's three daughters, 19
year old Eliza, 17 year old Matilda and 15 year old Lu are not listed with
Liberty. Matilda was with Dr. Kirkpartrick’s family, Eliza appears
to be Mrs. Bell next door, where is Louthailia (have looked at census
for Mt. Sterling and Cooperstown). Lu married in Mt. Sterling in
1874. Was Louthailia married before marrying Price? Per grandson
of Velma Price Briggs (Lou's daughter), Lou went by the name of Louthada.
The Illinois Marriage Index must have the name transcribed incorrectly.
Did Matilda marry a bigamist? Did
she ever marry Valentine? How many times was she married?
A Matilda Courtney married Van Buren Patterson
01 Jan 1874.
Matilda states in her divorce petition in
1885 that she married Martin V B Patterson 01 Jan 1875.
Matilda had a 10 month old child by Martin
V B Patterson that was 10 months old in Feb 1976. When did the child
die?
Matilda Courtney had an illegitimate daughter
born in 1878 that died in the poor house at 1 day old.
A Mrs. Matilda Patterson is living in Hannibal
in 1880 with widower Thomas and his 3 children but no husband and no child.
Matilda's 10 month old child must have died before 1880 or was living with
someone else.
In June 1881 a Tilley Patterson and a Jacob
Valentine got a marriage license, never recorded. We know this is
not the Tillie M. Patterson who married Charles Valentine and is buried
in Mt. Olivet Cemetery with the Stout headstone. Matilda was not
divorced and therefore could not remarry.
From July 1880 through Sept 1881 Martin V.B.
Patterson is in the Adams County Almshouse. According to the divorce
petition and the summons service he was living in Augusta, Hancock County,
in October 1875. By 1900 he is in the National Home for Disabled
Volunteer soldiers in Danville. This Patterson appears to have been
married in 1861 and in the Civil War from 1861-1865.
In January 1882 Arthur J. Valentine was born
to Matilda Courtney and has always been told his father is Jacob Valentine.
Why are there 2 Jacob Valentine’s in the 1885
Hannibal City Directory?
In 1885 Matilda divorces Martin V.B. Patterson
using the names Mrs. Matilda V. Patterson and Matilda V. Courtney.
Matilda never used the initial V. before. Was this to pretend for
her son that she was married to a Valentine before Patterson.
In 1888 a Mrs. Matilda V. Patterson marries
a George Nokes. There is a Nokes family in Adams County even though
they were married in Rock Island County.
When did Martin Courtney die? Where
did Martin's only son George G. Courtney go? I have a death certificate
from Los Angeles CA from March 1868 that appears to be a match for George
Grant Courtney who shot himself and committed suicide. Where are
all Liberty's wives buried? What happened to Elizabeth Courtney after
Liberty's death? Who are Eliza Taylor Courtney's parents? Who
are Liberty Courtney's parents?
