Services for Orville J. Swisher, formerly of 324 S. Burdick, are scheduled Tuesday at 10 a.m. in the Strode Funeral Home chapel. Swisher died Thursday, Sept. 3, 1987, in Westhaven Nursing Home at the age of 98. The Rev. Joe Bynum will officiate at the services, which include interment in Lanier Cemetery northwest of Stillwater. Members of Hanner-Sharp American Legion Post No. 129 will present a flag to his widow.
Swisher was born in Blue Mound, Kan., on Aug. 14, 1889, the son of J.W. and Laura Belle (Annis) Swisher. His parents homesteaded in Oklahoma, and he married Ida Madison in Perry on Aug. 8, 1923. They returned to Kansas, where Mr. Swisher joined the Army at the age of 28, serving in the cavalry. For the past 75 years, he lived and farmed in Payne and Noble counties.
Swisher was a member of the Legion Post for 70 years.
He was predeceased by three sons and two daughters.
Surviving are his wife; three sons, J.D. of Grand Junction, Colo., Ronald R. of Tulsa and Harold of Texas; eight daughters, Mrs. Hubert (Carol) Conway, Mrs. W.R. His headstone shows his death date as 13 Sep 1987, but his obituary shows his death date as 3 Sep 1987, and it was published on 6 Sep 1987. His daughter says the stone was engraved incorrectly.
