Notes for EDMOND GROSS:
Edmund Gross was born in Virginia, in 1792. The first known record of Edmund is in the 1819 Tax List of Pittsylvania County, Virginia. The next record of him is where he enlisted in the War of 1812. According to his pension file, he enlisted in Pittsylvania County, Virginia, 9 April 1813 and was discharged on 14 October 1814. Not to long after he appeared in the town of Mt. Pleasant in Knox County, Kentucky. This area became Harlan County in 1819. Later the name of Mt. Pleasant was changed to the town of Harlan. Edmund's name appears on the 1819 list of residents being transferred from Knox County to Harlan County. In 1816, Edmund married Hetty (Hester) Brock. They were married by George Brittain, in Knox County. Hetty was born in Knox County, in 1804. She is believed to be the daughter of James Brock and Elizabeth Osbourn, but currently there has been no verification of this. James Brock was the son of Jesse Brock. According to the records in Edmund's pension file, he died 7 April 1871 and Hetty died 14 May 1881. Edmund was buried on Straight Creek in Leslie County, Kentucky.
Edmund was believed to be the first teacher in Harlan County. It was said that he was given 150 acres of land at the head of Straight Creek by Will Turner for teaching his children reading, writing and arithmetic..
It is not known who Edmund's parents were. There is a strong possibility that he was Richard Gross from Pittsylvania Co., Virginia. In the 1810 tax list of the county there are three additional Grosses listed besides Edmund. They were Richard Sr., Richard Jr. and William Gross. Most likely, Richard Sr. is the father and Richard Jr., William and Edmund are the sons. There is also some court records connecting the four men together.
Edmund and Hetty had eleven children, all of which were married and had children with the exception of Sabra Perline, also known as Pliny. She died at the age of twenty five and was never married.
