Reverend SOLOMON POPE was born on 20 August 1812 in Stanfill, Allen County, Kentucky and died 30 April 1883 in Kentucky. His parents were RICHARD POPE and JANE COLLINS. He married SUSAN ELIZABETH BALL 15 December 1836 in Harlan County, Kentucky, daughter of JAMES BALL and SUSANNAH POSEY. She was born 28 July 1815 in Harlan County, Kentucky, and died 31 March 1906 in Kentucky. They had the following children. Moses, Nathan, Serilda, Drucilla, Susan, Emily, Nancy, John, Mary Jane, and William. Moses married Jerusha Skidmore and their daughter Mary Victoria Pope married James Frank Cawood and they were my paternal Grandparents.
Reverend Pope was converted to Methodism at Carpenters' Campground and was later appointed on the Bowling Green Circuit of the Methodist church under Isaac Collins. He joined the Kentucky Conference in 1835 and was appointed to the Somerset Circuit. He continued as a member of the Kentucky conference until 1861 when the Civil War erupted. He later served Harlan, Bell, Clay and Letcher Counties in Kentucky.
An excerpt from Solomon Pope's obituary: "To our dear departed, Solomon Pope, we can truly say the Methodist Church South has lost her strongest prop in these mountains; though like the meteor that darts across the trackless space, and paints the blaze upon the skies; so, we, by his light can walk. Until the morning trumpet shall sound and bid the precious dust arise; then we all together shall come; our bodies and our spirits united, then up with him we shall soar and reign forever more."
There is a small farming community named Pope in Allen County, Kentucky where Solomon Pope was born.
He is my Great Great Grandfather.
