THE AUSTIN PORTER LYNCHING
My wifes Gr-Gr Grandpa Barnett Porter had a brother Francis Reynolds Porter b. Nov 6, 1831 Wilkes Co,NC d. April 18, 1921 Greasy Ridge, Elliott Co,Ky married Hester Norville in 1855. Their son Austin Porter b. 1868 Elliott County was lynched by an armed mob that broke him out of jail June 17, 1892 and hung him. He had killed his wife Charlotte "Lottie" Yates on 26 May 1892.
Austin and Lottie had been seperated about a year when he went to the home of George H. and Perlina Yates (her parents) during the night and stabbed her to death in her sleep. The mob broke him out of jail on Lotties (would have been) 19th birthday.
The mob of well over 100 , armed with rifles, took him from the jail. They forced an Eastern Ky Railroad engineer (Bill Duke) to take him by train to a bridge outside Willard where they put a rope around his neck and tied the other end to the bridge. The rope broke when they pushed him off, so they fished him out of the water and made a new knot. They pulled him up slowly and left him hanging between the bridge timbers and the creek below. Later, when the coroner arrived, the body was cut down and taken to the depot at Willard where the body was turned over to his friends for burial.
An inquest was held and the jury found he died of "strangulation by a rope around the neck, placed there by whom we don't know".End.
NOTES: After the killing, Austin went to Josh Ison's place on Little Fork. Josh was married to Austins sister. Austin was a school teacher, and it goes that a student had told him lies concerning his wife.
Lottie and Austin married Carter Co,Ky 11 Jan 1889.
Story accounted for in the book "Southeastern Families". The Louisville Courier Journal covered the story.
This story was related to me by Rick Brown Jr in Dec 2000. Otherwise, I have no independent knowledge about these events. Thanks, Rick for the story.
