members of this branch of the Lack family can be traced to the 1700s in
Virginia and Tennessee, but there are many Lacks in all parts of the
world, including Finland, Scotland, England, and even Russia. It has been
speculated that the name began as Lax but was changed during the Civil
War to Lacks and later to Lack. One Lack member from several generations
ago said her family was of
Scottish descent and that the surname was originally Lach or Lachney. The Lacks were
said to have originally settled in the United States in Pennsylvania and
were called Pennsylvania Dutch or Black Dutch. It is said the first
William Lax was a sailor, the master of the Ann and Mary in 1705. A
“Dutch” Lack was born in Tennessee.
James Lack was said to be born in 1749 in Ireland and married Molly, born about 1750 in England. They had at least one son, Moses of Virginia, from whom this tree is descended. |
