Census

This page was last updated on Saturday, September 15, 2007 11:38 PM

This section contains the key census data of my connections and that of several other researchers.  I will not show any census data that shows living relatives.

The first census recorded in the United States was 1790.  The census data from 1790-1840 primarily only shows the name of the Head of the Household and the given number of persons (separated by age ranges) enumerated at that household.  The 1850 Census was the first to list the name of each person enumerated in the household, with a sex, age, place of birth, etc.

The 1900 Census provides an important new element in that it gives the birth month and year of an ancestor.

Census data is certainly a foundational element of any genealogy.  This section of the website  will continue to be updated and evolve.

Warren

Roll 32, Book 1, Page 816. He is listed as Raleigh Lankford.

1820 KY Warren

The census shows Benjamin D. Lankford as the Head of Household. Living in the household is 1 free white male between age 16 and under 26 (this would be Benjamin), 2 free white females under the age of 10 (these would be Jane and Eleanor) and 1 free white female age 16-26 (this would be his first wife, Nancy Wood.

1830 KY Simpson

Sheet 29A. The head of the household is listed as Benjamin Langford.  Living in this household is 1 Free White Male under the age of 5, 4 Free White Males between the age of 5 and 10 years old, 1 Free White Male between the age of ten and fifteen, 1 free white male between the age of 30 and 40 (Benjamin D. was b. 1795 = 35 yrs. old), 4 Free White Females between the age of ten and fifteen, 1 Free White Female between the age of 15 and 20 and 1 free white female between the age of 30 and 40 (Nancy Wood was b. 1795 = 35 yrs. old). There are no slaves listed in this household with a total of 13 people residing at this household. Pay particular attention to the following 5 neighboring families as they are an important anchor on the following 1840 census. They are: Deathridge, Hendrick, Lockhart, Noel and Slofs.

1830 NC Warren Smith's Creek District, Page 585 (Hand Numbered), (Ancestry.com image 3 of 6). The head of the household is listed as John D. Langford.  Living in this household is 1 Free White Male age 10-15, 1 Free White Male age 20-30 (John Dole Langford), 1 Free White Female age 15-20 (Possibly Mahala b. Abt. 1811 = 19 years old), 1 Free White Female age 20-30 (Possibly Alicy T.), 1 Free White Female age 60-70 (Possibly John's mother, Patsey Duke Langford), 1 Slave. There are 6 total people living at this household.

Simpson

Roll 124, Book 1, Sheet 187. This household lists 2 Free White Males between the age of 5 and 10 years old, 1 Free White Male between the age of 30 and 40, 3 Free White Females under the age of 5, 1 Free White Female between the age of 5 and 10 years old and 1 Free White Female between the age of 30 and 40 years old. There are no slaves listed and the total quantity of people listed is 8. Additionally, 2 people in the family are listed as being employed in agriculture. Now for the discrepancies found in the 1840 Census. The first and most obvious error is the spelling of his name. It is listed as Benjamin P. Landford. Secondly, the ages for Benjamin and Nancy appear to be inaccurate. If both Benjamin and Nancy were born in 1795, they would be 45 years old. This means that they would both be recorded inaccurately in the wrong column. Now, do you remember the neighboring families of Deathridge, Hendrick, Lockhart, Noel and Slofs? They are all still living right next to Benjamin and Nancy. One family is a coincidence but 5 is unbelievable. This leads me to believe that the enumerator has made multiple errors on this census. This provides me with another important fact. Benjamin has lived in the same location for at least 10 years and possibly as many as 20 years.

Unknown Townships, Warren County, North Carolina, Roll 372, Page 45. He is listed as John D. Lankford. Living in this household are the following people: 1 Free White Male under the age of 5, 1 Free White Male between the age of 30 and 40 (presumably John Dole Langford himself), 1 Free White Female under the age of 5 (presumably Martha A. Langford), and 1 Free White Female between the age of 20 and 30 (presumably Martha Eliza Steed). There is an entry at the bottom of this Census page that reads, "For rest of Warren see last pages of Vol. 9 following Tyrrell County."
