Timeline Project:  Early Langford/Lankford Ancestors in NC & VA (1600-1800)

Timeline Project:  Langford/Lankford - North Carolina & Virginia 1600-1800

The information on this page was last updated on Tuesday, August 07, 2007 10:09 AM

The purpose of this section is to list some of the events that occurred during the older generations of Langford/Lankford families in the Virginia and the Granville, Vance and Warren Counties North Carolina region, where my ancestors would have been located. Where appropriate, I will list the source material for that footstep.  I will also be including possible England connections once we tie those down "with documented evidence only." It is hoped that by having a time line, we can perhaps identify these family groupings more easily.  This section will be a work in progress based upon collaborations with other researchers.  Items listed below in black are supported by documentation.  Items listed below in red, are either speculative or an event I have not found supporting documentation on.  Items in blue are, in my opinion, my direct ancestors. Entries that are highlighted in yellow, indicate county or state line shifts. Notes that are written in green, are individual notes and/or clarifying information by the researcher who donated the source. I have purposely left any incorrectly spelled words from these records to maintain consistency.  As you will see in this ongoing research project, there are a great deal of Langford/Lankford footsteps long before the Revolutionary War (more than I thought initially, that's for sure).

I welcome any and all feedback on this timeline.  Please keep in mind that it sometimes tedious translating all of the land purchase abbreviations and acronyms.  I would truly invite anyone else who has access to some of these publications to verify any of these summarized entries.  Poldi Tonin is also recording this information on her Langford blog site, http://www.frontporchrockernews.blogspot.com/ .  If you print these pages.

It is helpful to go to Page Setup, and select Landscape format before printing this timeline.

This is planned to be a group effort and indeed has been a great one.  I am beyond impressed that so many folks have contributed so much of these important ancestors footsteps. I would like to recognized the participants of this Lang/Lankford Timeline Project:

Sherlene Bartholomew, Sandy Bolick, Marc Coker, Rose Cranston, Jeff Davis, Nola Duffy, Karen Hill, Bob Langford (TN), Gene Lankford, Judy R. Langford, Marlene Shake, Mary Ann Tyre (for her sharing and help with entries) and Poldi Tonin most especially for brainstorming this great idea and for furnishing so many documented footsteps.

Rose's Research Note:  If Benjamin Lewis Goodman, son of Samuel b. 1701, sold his 150 ac. and plantation on the Little River, on 23 Oct 1754 for £140, than we must assume that the following land surveys were of the
land of Benjamin Goodman, son of Benjamin b. 5 March 1662. This assumption based on the fact
that this property is the same as that recorded from the original family.

TIMELINE OBSERVATIONS & COMMENTS

July 2, 2007

Jeff Davis

It would appear that Granville County, NC is our weakest area of information.  I will need to figure out how to get more data for these area Langford's.

July 3, 2007

Poldi Tonin

The Deeds for Bute County, NC are loaded with the families of Surry and Lunenburg counties Virginia. It reads as a virtual who migrate where.  Note that there was a Langford/Williams marriage. What relationship was Catherine Williams to these Williams men in land transactions with Langford's? We will need to find Wills for the Williams in the chance they mention Catherine and her relationship to them.

  Jeff Davis

I know that in my particular case, the Lunenburg County, VA to Bute and Warren County, NC are especially important.  Bute County didn't house my Langford/Lankford ancestors for very long before I find them in Warren County, NC.

July 7, 2007

Jeff Davis

I have noticed that Isle of Wight County, VA fell under the religious Parish of Newport Parish.  Researching these Parish records would in all certainty contain even further information on these Lankford's.
