John Berry was born 1755 in England. During the Revolutionary War, John served: with Capt. John McClelan of Col. Chambers' Regiment of the State of Pennsylvania; with Capt. William Long's Company of the Eighth Battalion; with the Cumberland County Militia, 1778; and with the Third Call, Eighth Battalion. He married Elizabeth Merritt on Feb. 1, 1781 in Shermans Valley, Perry Co., Pennsylvania. John Berry is recorded on the 1823, 1824, 1825, 1826, and 1827 tax rolls in Mifflin Co., Pennsylvania. His Will was probated on Feb 17, 1830, in Lack Township, Juniata Co., Pennsylvania. John and Elizabeth Berry raised nine children: James, John, Agnes, Mary, Elizabeth, Nancy, Ruth, Hannah, and Joseph. Prior to 1820, the following children moved to Preble and Butler counties in Ohio: James (married Mary Owens), Elizabeth (married Henry Bell), and Ruth (married James Gray), while these children remained in Juniata County, Pennsylvania: Hannah (married William Wallace), Nancy (married William Owens Jr.), and Joseph (married Mary T. Gray). John Berry’s son James next moved to Clinton Co., Indiana with his seven children, including his son, James A. Berry Jr., who had married Louisa Catherine Charlotte Burkhardt while living in Ohio. Several branches of John Berry’s descendants migrated to Indiana and Geary, Lincoln and Davis counties in Kansas.
