John Berry was born about 1765 in Virginia, possibly in Whitehall, King and Queen County.   He married Edith Ann Polk on April 28, 1787 in Brunswick Co., Virginia.   Their children were:   Hugh, Sally, Mary Elizabeth, William, John Jackson, Henry, Richard Talley, Centilla, Pryor Talley and German.   By 1800, John Berry had migrated to Chesterfield Co., South Carolina.   In 1819, John Berry and his family moved to Covington Co., Mississippi where they resided until about January 1828 when they moved to Silver Creek on the boundary line of Simpson and Lawrence counties in Mississippi.   John Berry’s known siblings were German Berry (married Susannah Bailes), David Berry (married Rebecca Vines), Jemima Berry (married John Shivers) and possibly Celia Berry.
