James Berry, the earliest known ancestor of this line, can first be documented in Lincoln County, North Carolina through his circa 1812 marriage to Jane Gullick. In 1819, James and Jane (Gullick) Berry moved to Madison County, Illinois. After Jane’s death in June of 1820 and James Berry’s disappearance, the two known children of this couple, Benjamin Davidson Berry and Rufus Berry, were raised by their Uncle Beniah Gullick in Madison County, Illinois.
