The earliest known ancestor in this lineage, James Berry, was born in Devonshire, England and was in America by 1636 when he was granted 350 acres in Accomack, Virginia "at Mogatie Bay" for transporting himself, his wife Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) and five other persons. James Berry remained in the Accomack area (later known as Northampton Co., Virginia), signing an Oath of Loyalty to the English Crown on March 21, 1651. In 1652, he moved to Calvert Co., Maryland. James Berry died in 1685 either in Calvert or Talbot Co., Maryland. His children were: Roger Berry (<1634-?); Martha Berry (<1634-?) and William Berry (1635-1685/86).
William Berry married [1] Rhoda Preston (children were James and William) and [2] Margaret Marsh (children were Benjamin, Joseph, Thomas, Richard and Rebecca).
