Formerly the earliest known ancestor of this line, John Berry was born about 1786 in Kentucky. John migrated from Kentucky to Indiana sometime around the War of 1812. During the War of 1812, he served in both the Indiana and Kentucky militias. His wife, Hannah Devore Berry, was granted a widow’s pension for his service. In 1826 he left Indiana for Texas where he lived out the rest of his life. John Berry died in Williamson County, Texas, on Dec. 24, 1866. John married three times during his life and produced 18 known children. His marriages were: Betsy Smothers married about 1810 probably in Kentucky; Gracie Treat, married July 13, 1819 in Monroe Co., Indiana; and Hannah Devore, married May 8, 1831 probably in Liberty Co., Texas.
