The earliest known ancestor of this line, John S. Berry, was born in Maryland. On 6 January 1829, he married Susan Wysong Fleshart in Knox Co., Tennessee. It is presumed that John S. Berry was deceased by 1840, since Susan W. Berry, and three children, including James Henry Berry, born February 19, 1833 in Tuscumbria, Alabama, are found on the 1840 Franklin County, Alabama, census. In 1842, Susan remarried to Charles D. Young in Polk County, Missouri. James Henry Berry migrated to California in 1851. Descendants live in California, Nebraska, Colorado and British Columbia, Canada.
