Tatoo sounded lights out! Another old Confederate solider has crossed over the river to rest under the shade of the trees, with his old comrades that have passed on before him.
Hamilton T. Berry (known by his friends as Hamp), subject of these memoirs, was born in Madison County Sept 21, 1839, and his entire useful life, except for four years in which he served his country as a brave Confederate solider, was spent in Madison County and departed this life near Port, after an illness of a few days of pneumonia, in the 85th year of his age.  He was the oldest son of Elisha and Sidney Berry (nee Yowell), well remembered citizens of this county. In April, 1861, in his 23rd year, he enlisted in the Madison cavalry, Capt. Morgan Strother.  He was bugler for the company and participated in the many battles in which that company was engaged.  He knew all the bugle calls, such as reveille, tatoo, feed call, and charge, but never learned how to sound retreat.  He was by the side with bugle in hand, of his Colonel Robert Randolph, when the latter was killed at Yellow Tavern, and one of the first to try to give relief to that gallant officer.  When the war was ended he came home and went to work.  He was a business man of more than ordinary acumen, accumulating a comfortable competence  He successfully carried on the woolen mills at Port, which in the years gone by was famous for the product. Feb 6, 1886, he was most happily married to miss Lucy M. Collins of this county, who preceded him to the better land, Feb 18, 1923, after having spent more than half a century as his helpmate, not in name alone, but in deed and truth. From this happy marriage there was born eight children, six girls and two boys. One daughter, who married Mr. H.E. Berry, of this county, died a good many years ago, leaving one son, Mr. Rupert H. Berry, of  Washington.  The living children are;  Mr. Edgar H. Berry of Port; Mrs. Ella F. Ford, Oak Park; Miss Nettle G. Berry,  Harrisonburg; Mrs. Birdie S. Yowell, Washington; Mr. Marvin W. Berry, Laurel Mills: Mrs. Lizzie A Yowell, Lynchburg: two brother, Messrs, D.C. and T. J. Berry, of the county; 10 grandchildren and three great grand children.
During the civil war he professed religion and connected himself with Rapidan Baptist church.  Moving from that vicinity in 1873, he moved his membership to Mt. Zion Baptist church. Wednesday, May 28, his earthly remains were laid to rest by loving hands in Mt. Zion cemetery near Oak Park by the side of his faithful wife.  One funeral sermon was preached by pastor Rev. J. W. Morgan, pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist church.  The honorary pall-bearers were; Messrs E. W Lacy, A. N Blankenbaker, Irvin Hill, H.E Berry, Shelton Jenkins, D. M. Petil, J.P. Goodall, J.W. Fry, G.W. Yowell, Samuel Larkin, J. E. Ford, M.R. Ford, E. D. Ford, Mike Coats, W. E. Farrar and Byron Deal. On acount of rainy weather and the terrible roads, many of his old friends were detained from being present to pay their last tribute of love and respect to their old friend and comrade. A few more years shall roll around, a few more seasons come, and we will be with them that rest within the quiet tomb, until then farewell old comrade and friend. I expect to meet and greet you again.” D.M.P.  Madison Eagle
