William EAGLE the artist - items about his paintings

Ron has looked at The Times archives and other places but did not find anything on William

A letter Lesley sent me - Dear Lesley Simons,
Thank you for your enquiry, received 25/11/2006, regarding the artist William Eagle.
Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find very much information on him.  Searching various online and book resources, I came across only one entry on William Eagle, which was in the Dictionary of Victorian Painters by Christopher Wood (1995, p.152, text volume).  The entry reads as follows:
"W. Eagle: Exhibited one picture, 'The Stolen Kiss' at the B.I. (British Institution) in 1866. London address".

I then had a look in The British Institution, 1806-67: a complete dictionary of contributors and their work from the foundation of the Institution by Algernon Graves (London, 1908, p.171).
This has the record of 'The Stolen Kiss' being sold for £30 in 1866.  It also lists Eagle's address at the time as 2 Elizabeth Terrace, Campbell Road, Bow.
I have had a thorough search on the Internet for any mention of this painting and/or William Eagle but have not found anything.
I am sorry I could not be of more help.  Best of luck with your research.
Yours sincerely Catherine English

My Mother always said my Uncle Arthur had found a RA artist in the family -  presumably he might have meant British Institution - in 1871 Wm is an artist portrait and  historical and "Stolen Kiss" may not sound quite right but the title is famous.

Here is a famous painting of that name which I show here with thanks to the siite http://bertc.com/subone/Fragonard.htm

I wonder if William's was  in the style of or just a coincidence of name

An email a friend sent me earlier

Hi Ron, there is only one exhibit listed for William Eagle ,that was at the British Institution in 1866,he is listed as based in London and the subject matter as domestic.

There are two other entries that might interest you: Edmond
Eagles from Great Missenden, he exhibited from 1851-1877,18 in the Royal Academy,1 in the British Institution,16 in the Society of British Artists and 2 in various exhibitions, all domestic scenes, also a Reverand John Eagles from Bristol, landscape artist, one in the Royal Academy and 5 in the British Institution, these other two are listed as Eagles not Eagle,

1871 he is at 2 Washington St, Bromley St Leonard.
1862 map shows Campbell but not Elizabeth Terrace I would guess it was a row of
houses on Campbell and not a little lane.

?

1917 I can see Washington just east of Campbell  other side of St Leonard - Washington is not on 1862 map - neither are streets north and south of it so it must be a new estate in 1871. So  it must be OUR William  at the BI as he was sure in Bow
