I am in touch with Andrew Lancaster who has a web site

and has a page on names related to Lancaster which mentions Lankshear

I have various thoughts on the question of
how people saw the difference between Lancashire and Lancaster type
surnames with all their variant spellings. 

I believe that at least in Britain, families alternated right into the
19th century, indicating that the two words were at least sometimes
felt to be equivalent. Obviously they sound different so the
explanation must be in terms of the meaning the words have.

In fact, I wonder if it might be true that some people saw Lancaster
as the more correct way of writing Lancashire, based upon the correct
political terminology? (Lancaster was not a shire but a "county
palatinate". Older official documents normally just refer to
Lancaster, and rarely to Lancashire I think?)

This would in turn seem to imply that Lancaster can sometimes come
from Lancashire, but probably Lancashires less often descend from
Lancasters?

I'd be interested to hear if anyone thinks any of the above makes sense!
