Hill: 10 August 1850 Census Gilmer County, GA 310 310 Daniel Carroll 35 45 North Carolina Mary 33 ---- This does not look like a definite connection. It is a possible cousin from a different line. Perhaps a descendant of Jesse, or Nathaniel or Thomas Carroll. The previously named Carrolls are before our William Carroll Sr. This information is provided from Loretta K Carroll: At this time she might be a distant cousin related to a brother of Miles Carroll?? His name is Daniel Carroll. Loretta says: Several years ago, someone left a book on my Uncle's porch when he wasn't at home. This book contains a geneology of the Carroll Family, particularly those who went to Kentucky during the time period 1897 and going through about 1912. So far, it has been the most extensive record that we have found, in that many of the others only trace as far back as Luke Carroll, my GGG Grandfather. Luke was married 5 times and had an extremely large family. His last child was born when Luke was in his late 80's. This child was by his last wife, Vestie, who was the only wife that he didn't out live. My branch of the family tree originated from his first wife. I was told that she was Shawnee ( no name yet ). As to the geneology book that I was telling you about, there are a few mistakes that our family has noticed, but the older information was very valuable to us. We do not know who was responsible for this book, but it mentions the Carroll County Historical Society in Virginia, of which Carrolls can join and it lists an address. My Uncle has been very selfish with his book, and I haven't had it in my possession for very long, so I haven't written for more information yet. Hill I came across an interesting comment on Daniel Carroll, the signer of the Constitution, the other day. It seems as if he was an interpreter for the Catawba and Cherokee Indians for several of the treaties signed with them. Daniel Carroll, William Perry, and Benjamin Hawkins from North Carolina, are listed at one point as serving on a Committee to conclude a treaty with the Cherokee Indians in 1785. However, Daniel Carroll of Maryland, declined the appointment at the last minute. A general observation is made that many of the Carrolls lived on the frontier near the Indian borders and were therefore in a position to learn the Indian languages at an early age. ---- April 17, 1997: From Randall Hill Captain John E. Price's Company of Mounted Volunteers from Gilmer County, GA. On December 26, 1837, they were used for removal of Cherokees and Creeks from May 25, 1838 and July 13, 1838. Private William Carroll is listed on the roster. Note: There is a William Carroll in the 1850 census that indicates he is 53 years old at that time. He would have been about 41 years old in 1838. Well, I looked up the story again, and it says that his daughter was double-jointed. The map shows the "Gold Region" between Section 2 and Section 3, very near District 18. In a special census of March 29, 1834, for Union County, GA are listed William Carroll and John Carroll. Hicks, Gainesville, GA. "I was born in Anniston County, South Carolina in 1861. I claim relationship to the Cherokee Indians through my mother, Martha Hicks, who was a quarter Cherokee Indian, her maiden name being Martha Carroll, and she claimed through her father, John Carroll, who was a half Cherokee Indian...My mother told me that she was raised among the Indians and lived among them when she was a girl...My people have always been recognized as white people" 15222. He was then living in Gilmer County, GA....Don't know whether my father was dead before 1851 or not. All of my brothers and sister were half....My father might have been living on the Knotley River in Cherokee County, North Carolina in 1835 or he may have been living on Fightingtown Creek in Gilmer County, GA. I was a boy when I left North Carolina about seven years of age and then I came to Gilmer County, GA. Some of the Indians were here at that time....Daniel Carroll and Bartlett Godfrey were the only two witnesses I had and they are both dead....this fellow Daniel Carroll, who is dead has often heard my father call me his son. He swore that in an affadavit that you have. The last time I saw my father was about 68 years ago on Sherlog Creek in Gilmer County, GA....I have always been recognized as a white man. I really just happened on the application comments by accident. I thought the tie with Gilmer County, GA and the Carrolls was something I could not pass up. Something clicked when I discovered that Waynesville, Missouri was located on the Trail of Tears to Arkansas and Oklahoma. Then, one evening, Mary, one of my cousins living near Iberia, Missouri, told me something that rather shocked me. It appears that the area in and around Miles Carroll's orchard in rural Miller County, Missouri had several Indian residents.
