Loresinging Guide

Sunbaem's Guide to Loresinging and Purifying Gems

~ by Sunbaem Elvil-Gandir

Loresinging Introduction

First let me say that I have read many guides and listened to many bards talk about loresinging. As with many things, different people have different opinions. In this guide I will strive to explain the things I have learned and what I know works for me. I would suggest that anyone learning the art of loresinging should gather as much information as they can on the subject....then find what works for them.

Starting Out

First of all....sing to absolutely anything and everything! While as a young bard, many items will refuse to divulge their secrets....but it's the only way you will learn. When I first started out, I would find a quiet table and then sing to everything I owned. I found it especially useful to sing to items that I already knew the properties of....things like acantha leaf. That way I was really just testing my skills and comparing what my loresongs told me to what I knew to be true. Just keep plenty of wolifrew lichen and torban leaf on hand to fix your nerves! If you're like me you'll get carried away and forget to watch your mana. As a bard, you'll find that having an empath around can be handy!

Putting Together Your Song

I've seen debates about two verse songs and four verse songs. I prefer two verse songs that rhyme. And that means true rhymes (sing/bring, end/lend, tough/rough ... spelled the same!) not rhymes that sound the same like all and haul. You can't go wrong with true rhymes. The meter of the song makes a difference as well. However to get around this, I've found that if I add a comma after the name of the item I'm singing to...it changes the meter of the song and sometimes a song that got no response now works just fine!

You will want to type in your song starting with the verb LORESING. Then type in your verses using ; to separate each line. For example:

LORESING boots, please tell me and tell me true,;What might be your own value?

Will come out as:

You sing:

"Boots, please tell me and tell me true,

What might be your own value?"

Roundtime: 9 sec.

Key words

Some may say you don't need to include these but when you are first starting out it can't hurt. I have found that most items will give you all the information you're looking for if you sing to them four times, using each of the four key words in order. Mix up the order....sure, it might work. Then again, sometimes it doesn't. I stick to singing to items in order and it works every time. The order for loresinging key words:

Value

Purpose

Magic

Special Ability

I've also heard that you don't need to include the name of the item you're singing to in your song but again, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. I prefer to use the keywords and the item's name in my loresinging simply because I know it works every time for me. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Loresinging Translations

Getting an item to tell you something about it is one thing....understanding the information you get is another! Here are some examples of my loresinging as well as translations of the messages the items give:

Value

You sing:

"Boots, please tell me and tell me true,

What might be your own value?"

Roundtime: 9 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the hunting boots in your hand, and you learn something about it...

The first thing that strikes you about the boots is the weight, which is about 2 pounds. In your best estimation, it's worth around 1000 silvers.

Singing for value always gives you weight first, then the amount. Don't be confused by this though, just because something says it is worth around 1000 silvers doesn't mean that's what it sells for! The amount given here is usually just how much it sold for at the merchant. Some items that weren't sold at a merchant might give you ridiculously low values. Be very careful what you tell people....the last thing you want is someone saying "But Sunbaem told me this was worth three million silvers!! What do you mean it's worthless?"

Purpose

You sing:

"Boots I'm listening it's all coming clear

But your purpose is what I'd like to hear."

Roundtime: 11 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the hunting boots in your hand, and you learn something about it...

From the pitch of the vibration you determine that the purpose of the boots is as a wearable container of some kind.

So now you know the boots have pockets! Nice! Bards can't tell how big/deep pockets are....only by testing them the way everyone else does. Fill them up and figure it out! Also, once I know something has pockets I immediately try to open or close them. Just nice to know!

Magic

You sing:

"Boots that's most helpful for me to know,

What magic within you will you now show?"

You learn nothing new about the boots.

Nothing new....time to stop singing. Most containers will only tell you their value and purpose. There really isn't anything else to learn about them!

*****

Value

You sing:

"Falchion, please tell me and tell me true,

What might be your own value?"

Roundtime: 10 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the drake falchion in your hand, and you learn something about it...

The first thing that strikes you about the falchion is the weight, which is about 5 pounds. In your best estimation, it's worth around 900 silvers. You can also tell that there is some type of metal in the structure of the drake falchion.

Bards are the most accurate when it comes to weight. Everyone knows you can weigh something five times and get five different numbers for weight....but loresinging will give you the accurate weight every time. Also, notice the value is only 900 silvers! This item wasn't found at a merchant so the number seems ridiculously low. Most items like drake falchions (which this is) that are found on critters or in boxes have very low values like this.

Purpose

You sing:

"Falchion I'm listening it's all coming clear

But your purpose is what I'd like to hear."

Roundtime: 12 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the drake falchion in your hand, and you learn something about it...

You sense a faint aura of magic around the drake falchion. From the pitch of the vibration you determine that the purpose of the falchion is as some type of weapon.

Sensing a faint aura of magic around a weapon .... means either it is enchanted or has some special ability. You have to sing to it more to find out exactly what that magic aura means! And personally I love it when a weapon tells you.....it's some type of weapon. What a shocker!! But it can be exciting if you're singing to a tree limb or something ordinary like that and it tells you it's a weapon. Sometimes you will be surprised!

Magic

You sing:

"Falchion that's most helpful for me to know,

What magic within you will you now show?"

Roundtime: 12 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the drake falchion in your hand...

The way it vibrates in tune with your voice tells you that it requires skill in edged weapons to use effectively. It also has some type of special ability, but you can't tell what yet.

Singing to a weapon for it's magical properties will first tell you what kind of training you need to use it.....edged, two-handed, polearms, etc. This weapon didn't give me any information about its enchant, just that it had a special ability. So I sing for that next to see what it is!

Special Ability

You sing:

"Falchion, from me you have nothing to hide,

What special ability do you hold inside?"

Roundtime: 11 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the drake falchion in your hand...

The harmonics generated tell you that this falchion has been infused with the power of a fire elemental.

Infused with the power of a fire elemental.....so it has fire crits!

So when I'm done singing to this weapon I've found out that it's a One Handed Edged Weapon with fire crits that weighs 5 pounds.

*****

Value

You sing:

"Falchion, please tell me and tell me true,

What might be your own value?"

Roundtime: 10 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the vultite falchion in your hand, and you learn something about it...

The first thing that strikes you about the falchion is the weight, which is about 4 pounds. In your best estimation, it's worth at least 82,000 silvers. You can also tell that there is some type of metal in the structure of the vultite falchion.

Notice that the value is only 82k? That's what the merchant charged for this falchion.....but I know it was enchanted further so this is where you have to be careful! Wait until you're done singing before you give this kind of information out. Or preface it with "The merchant charged...." so they know it's not actually what the item is worth! Also, you can see there is metal in the structure of the item. This comes in handy to know for things like imbeddibles, you know right away if they will crumble or not since metallic items don't crumble.

Purpose

You sing:

"Falchion I'm listening it's all coming clear

But your purpose is what I'd like to hear."

Roundtime: 12 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the vultite falchion in your hand, and you learn something about it...

You sense a faint aura of magic around the vultite falchion. From the pitch of the vibration you determine that the purpose of the falchion is as some type of weapon.

Magic aura....have to sing again to find out exactly what that is!

Magic

You sing:

"Falchion that's most helpful for me to know,

What magic within you will you now show?"

Roundtime: 12 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the vultite falchion in your hand...

It has a bonus of +35 from a normal falchion, and the way it vibrates in tune with your voice tells you that it requires skill in edged weapons to use effectively. It also has some type of special ability, but you can't tell what yet.

Unlike the drake falchion earlier which had no enchant....this one tells you it has a +35 bonus. Every +5 = 1x so this is a 7x weapon. See now why the value is so subjective? This weapon may have cost 82k at the merchant when it was bought but the additional enchants that were added to it make it worth much, much more! Singing for the magic also tells us it is an edged weapon and that it has a special ability....but don't get too excited until you sing again!

Special Ability

You sing:

"Falchion, from me you have nothing to hide,

What special ability do you hold inside?"

Roundtime: 11 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the vultite falchion in your hand...

The harmonics generated tell you that this falchion has been enchanted by a wizard, though you are unable to determine exactly whom.

And that's why you should sing before you get too excited.....a special ability on a weapon doesn't always mean flares or weighting. It could just be that it was enchanted further by a wizard. Or it might be that it's blessed.

So from singing to this falchion we know it's a 7x falchion that weighs four pounds and is a one-handed edged weapon. It's been enchanted by a wizard so it's not blessable and it has no special crits. It helps to play with things though because when I touched this falchion, this happened:

As you touch your falchion, you smile to yourself, imagining the kiss of the weapon against your foe's neck.

It's been zested! And so now we know zesting doesn't show up in loresinging at all. A good bard can take the information they learn by loresinging along with the things they find out just by checking the item over and give a full picture of exactly what the item is/does. Don't rely solely on loresinging....it won't tell you everything!

*****

Value

You sing:

"Leathers, please tell me and tell me true,

What might be your own value?"

Roundtime: 10 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the grey leathers in your hand, and you learn something about it...

The first thing that strikes you about the leathers is the weight, which is about 12 pounds. In your best estimation, it's worth at least 210,000 silvers.

These leathers cost 210k at the merchant and weigh 12 pounds. After a while you get to know the standard weights for the different armor classes and 12 pounds is a bit odd....just a clue that there is something special about these.

Purpose

You sing:

"Leathers I'm listening it's all coming clear

But your purpose is what I'd like to hear."

Roundtime: 12 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the grey leathers in your hand, and you learn something about it...

You sense a faint aura of magic around the grey leathers. From the pitch of the vibration you determine that the purpose of the leathers is as some type of defensive garment.

Faint aura of magic so I have to sing again....

Magic

You sing:

"Leathers that's most helpful for me to know,

What magic within you will you now show?"

Hmm...nothing happened. That's odd. Let me try using their full name.

>tap grey leather

You tap some smokey grey leathers.

Ok, they're grey leathers, let's try that!

You sing:

"Grey leathers that's most helpful for me to know,

What magic within you will you now show?"

Roundtime: 12 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the grey leathers in your hand...

It has a bonus of +25 from a normal leathers, and the way it vibrates in tune with your voice tells you that it is soft leather armor.

That's better! So they're +25...that's 5x. Soft leather armor includes full, double, and reinforced leathers. Usually you can tell exactly what kind it is by the weight but 12 pounds isn't normal for full or double leathers....a puzzle! Sing again and see what we can find out....

Special Ability

You sing:

"Leathers, from me you have nothing to hide,

What special ability do you hold inside?"

Roundtime: 11 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the grey leathers in your hand...

You are unable to determine anything new about the grey leathers.

That's it...not telling me anything else and I still don't know what kind of leathers these are! So I assess them.....

You examine the leathers closely and you don't note anything, aside from the fact that it would be classified as soft leather armor, and covers the torso, arms, legs, neck, and head.

Roundtime: 43 sec.

Soft leather that covers everything...that's double leather! But it only weighs 12 pounds! So we now know these are 5x double leathers that have been lightened. Puzzle solved!

Value

You sing:

"Note, please tell me and tell me true,

What might be your own value?"

Roundtime: 9 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the golden musical note in your hand, and you learn something about it...

This is a small item, under a pound. In your best estimation, it's worth around 4500 silvers. You can also tell that there is some type of metal in the structure of the golden musical note.

This item weighs under a pound....something else bard's can do! If you weigh something yourself the lightest it will ever be is "less than 2 pounds." Bards can tell which items are 2 pounds, 1 pound or less than a pound! This item was bought at a merchant for 4500 silvers and it's metallic....so it won't crumble.

Purpose

You sing:

"Note I'm listening it's all coming clear

But your purpose is what I'd like to hear."

Roundtime: 11 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the golden musical note in your hand, and you learn something about it...

You sense a faint aura of magic around the golden musical note. From the pitch of the vibration you determine that the purpose of the note is to cast a spell or perform some magical purpose.

Now we know this item will cast a spell....but we don't know if it's blank, imbedded already, how many charges, if it can be reimbedded or what! Have to sing again...

Magic

You sing:

"Note that's most helpful for me to know,

What magic within you will you now show?"

Roundtime: 11 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the golden musical note in your hand...

This is a magical item, which casts spells from the Elemental sphere. It does not currently have any charges left.

Now we know it was already imbedded.... but someone used up all the charges. We still have to find out if it can be imbedded again.

Special Ability

You sing:

"Note, from me you have nothing to hide,

What special ability do you hold inside?"

Roundtime: 11 sec.

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the golden musical note in your hand...

The golden musical note contains the spell Elemental Wave, from the minor elemental circle.

Well that's it. If it could be reimbedded it would have told us that the magic was strong and it could handle being imbedded with a totally new spell if handled correctly. It didn't say that so it can't be reimbedded. It's just a used up imbed that now can be worn as just a nice-looking pin. Also, when it comes to seeing the exact spell that was or is in an item....sometimes you just can't see it. Spells within our own spell circles are easiest to see. When you're little you usually can't see anything higher than the spells that you know. Level 8 bards won't be able to see spells higher than 1008 or 408. Again, the older you get, the stronger your songs are and the more you will be able to find out.

Purifying Gems Introduction

The art of purifying gems has always been fascinating to me. More than just trying to make them worth more silvers, the thrill of finding a mage rechargable gem can be the highlight of your career! As with loresinging....practice makes perfect! The older you get, the more powerful your songs will become and the less likely you'll be to blow the gems up.

If you're going to sing to gems for other people make sure you let them know that there is always a chance that the gem will blow up. There's nothing worse than having it happen and then having to explain to the person afterwards!

Reading the Signs

The trick to purifying gems is to pay close attention to how the gems react to your voice. First they become more perfect, then smoother and more pure in color, then they improve somewhat, then they crack and strain, then they tend to explode....taking your hand along with it! Here are some examples of my loresinging where I've taken out most of the boring stuff....roundtimes and preparing the spell. The mechanics is simply....prepare 1004 and sing to my <insert gem name here>. It costs 4 mana every time you sing to a gem. The hard part is knowing when to stop. A gem might be pure the first time you sing to it....or it might become pure at any point. The same goes for exploding. It could explode at any time without warning! In the following examples, I was singing to gems for someone who wanted me to purify them for deed gems, look for orb gems and mage rechargables. This takes the longest and is the most mana consuming. If I'm just looking to make them worth more, I would sing to each one three times and move on. If someone is just looking for mage rechargable gems, I would sing to them once and if they weren't pure the first time I would keep going. Anything pure on the first song, I would loresing to it for its purpose. More on that later....

Examples:

You weave another verse into your harmony, directing the sound of your voice at an emerald.

In response to your voice, the emerald glows luminously, its crystalline structure reforming as the gem becomes more perfect.

When the song ends, you notice the emerald sparkles a little more and is void of some natural imperfections.

In this case, I didn't want to risk blowing up someone else's emerald so I stopped singing. The emerald was worth over 7k and he needed good gems for deeds. Good enough!

Now that's what you like to see!! When the gem begins to twist and turn, you've purified it! Sing to it and check the value....anything over 5k is worth using as an orb gem.

As the song continues, the uncut diamond begins to twist and turn as the very essence flows into it filling the imperfections.

Sometimes this happens....it's giving you the warning that you shouldn't sing to it any more (cracking and straining) and it becomes purified at the same time! When a gem is purified, I sing to it so that I can tell what its worth is. Again, anything over 5k is worth using as an orb gem.

You sing:

"Diamond, please tell me and tell me true,

What might be your own value?"

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the uncut diamond in your hand, and you learn something about it...

This is a small item, under a pound. In your best estimation, it's worth around 7750 silvers, and is of exceptional quality.

Worth almost 8k! Good orb gem and the owner was pleased! No reason to sing to it again to see if it's a mage rechargable since all mage rechargable gems are pure the very first time you sing to them.

I stopped singing here....really didn't want to blow up the blazestar as it was worth quite a bit! I tend to stop way earlier on the more expensive gems.

Good thing I stopped...nice deed gem!

I should have stopped earlier! Didn't take my own advice and paid for it by losing my right hand!

You weave another verse into your harmony, directing the sound of your voice at a bright violet feystone.

As the gem resonates in response to your voice, you sense that it cannot be purified any further.

This gem was pure the very first time I sang to it! Might be a mage rechargable or an orb gem....so I sing to it next.

You sing:

"Feystone, please tell me and tell me true,

What might be your own value?"

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the violet feystone in your hand, and you learn something about it...

This is a small item, under a pound. In your best estimation, it's worth around 5250 silvers, and is of below average quality.

OK, now I know it's worth over 5k so it's at least a good orb gem. Now I sing for purpose....

You sing:

"Feystone I'm listening it's all coming clear

But your purpose is what I'd like to hear."

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the violet feystone in your hand, and you learn something about it...

From the pitch of the vibration you determine that the purpose of the feystone is as a gem of some kind. As you sing, the feystone seems to resonate with your voice, and you feel it trying to draw power from you.

Nope, not a mage rechargable. All purified gems will try to draw power from you, that's how you can be sure they are pure. However, not all purified gems are orb gems. I judge them on value, myself. Anything over 5k is good and useable as an orb gem. Anything worth less will probably just make the orb explode two minutes after you start charging. Not worth it.

When I get an example of one, I'll post what it looks like when you find a mage rechargable.....but if it's pure the first time you sing to it and it pulses rhythmically in your hand when you sing for its purpose, it's a mage rechargable!

You weave another verse into your harmony, directing the sound of your voice at an emerald.

As you focus your voice on the emerald, you hear it crack loudly and strain under the force of the song.

When the song ends, you notice the emerald sparkles a little more and is void of some natural imperfections.

Cracking and straining....time to stop purifying! Now to check its value...

You sing:

"Emerald, please tell me and tell me true,

What might be your own value?"

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the emerald in your hand, and you learn something about it...

This is a small item, under a pound. In your best estimation, it's worth around 8250 silvers, and is of exceptional quality.

Worth over 8k, this one turned out to be a great deed gem!

*****

First time I sang to this gem:

You weave another verse into your harmony, directing the sound of your voice at a dragon's-tear emerald.

Your focused voice causes the dragon's-tear emerald to shatter into thousands of fragments!

... 10 points of damage!

Brushing blow to your right hand.

Sometimes you just can't catch a break!

*****

You weave another verse into your harmony, directing the sound of your voice at an uncut diamond.

As the gem resonates in response to your voice, you sense that it cannot be purified any further.

This diamond was pure the first time I sang to it! Mage rechargable maybe? Time to loresing to it...

You sing:

"Diamond, please tell me and tell me true,

What might be your own value?"

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the uncut diamond in your hand, and you learn something about it...

This is a small item, under a pound. In your best estimation, it's worth around 4200 silvers, and is of below average quality.

Only worth 4200 so no good for using as an orb gem, but I still have to sing to it for its purpose:

You sing:

"Diamond I'm listening it's all coming clear

But your purpose is what I'd like to hear."

As you sing, you feel a faint resonating vibration from the uncut diamond in your hand, and you learn something about it...

From the pitch of the vibration you determine that the purpose of the diamond is as a gem of some kind. As you sing, the diamond seems to resonate with your voice, and you feel it trying to draw power from you.

No pulsing so it's not a mage rechargable. Just a pure gem that he went and sold at the gemcutter's.

Observations:

I tend to blow up more gems when I'm low on mana. I don't know if this is absolutely true or not....but it never fails. I don't have the best mana share (all you bards out there know how hard it is to train in sharing!) so I tend not to offer to purify Joe Warrior's three backpacks full or gems that he's collected. He doesn't send mana very well, I don't receive mana very well, and being low on mana will just make me blow up way more gems than is necessary. Wait until you're at least titled before you offer to purify gems for folks like that....or make sure you have friends with loads of mana to send to you!

About Orb Gems

As I said earlier, orb gems are pure and worth over 5k. Some people find a star sapphire and purify it and try to sell it as an orb gem for 10k in the Landing. After much experimentation, we decided that 5k was the absolute lowest amount we could use and still have a decent charging session with the orb. In case you don't know what an orb gem is.....wizards use them to create an orb by pouring a grot k'tel potion onto the gem. They use their magics to charge up items using this orb. Others use pure gems as blank imbeddibles but they have to pour a grot k'tel potion onto it to prepare it for the imbedding. Grot potions cost about 2k and you can usually buy blanks for less than this.

About Mage Rechargables

In my four years of purifying and loresinging to gems, I have found two mage rechargable gems. I believe if you sing to every gem you ever find, you would most likely find a few more than I have. Just don't feel bad if you never find any! They're not that common.
