Edward Hunter Harr (M) b. 04 Nov 1847, d. 06 Sep 1884, #163
Edward Hunter Harr was born on 4 November 1847 at Washington Co., Virginia.1,2,3,4,5
He married Columbia Caroline Byerly on 3 September 1874 at Emporia, Lyon Co., Kansas.2,6,7
Harr Family Bible
Edward died of of typhoid fever on 6 September 1884 at Johnson City, Washington Co., TN, Johnson City, Washington Co., Tennessee, at age 36.8
His body was interred in September 1884 at Old Harr Cemetery at Sullivan Co., Tennessee.8
Edward was employed as a farmer and merchant.
Edward Hunter Harr married Columbia (Lummie) Byerly in Emporia, Lyon Co., Kansas, at the residence of R. L. Dishner. Robert L. Dishner's wife, Elizabeth, was a sister of Lummie. Edward's father, David, had moved his family to Kansas in 1871. Columbia's father, John Byerly, also moved from Tennessee to Kansas but not until 1880 according to John's obituary. Columbia may have been in Kansas visiting some relatives when she married Edward or may have come to Kansas for the specific purpose of marrying Edward. Edward and Columbia may have known each other before Edward's family moved to Kansas since the Harr and Byerly families had lived in Sullivan Co., Tennessee, during the same time period.
Edward returned to Tennessee moving to Washington Co. prior to 1880. On the 1880 U. S. Census his brothers John and William are listed in his household.
Edward Hunter Harr apparently died from typhoid fever shortly after being elected sheriff in 1884. The following is a transcription from the Johnson City, Tennessee Comet.
Sheriff elect, Ed. H. Harr, is very low with typhoid fever. A host of friends are shuddering to see this exceptionally good man so near unto death. There is hope that he may be spared to raise his precious children and to still bless the community with his noble deeds and pure life.9
Edward Hunter Harr died on that date according to the tombstone inscription. Two other related articles appeared in the Johnson City Comet.
The first: The county court will elect sheriff to fill vacancy caused by death of Mr. Ed. Harr.
The second: John Eakin for the Masonic Lodge at this place made arrangements with the railroad authorities for the midnight train to stop Sunday night at Union and take on the men who went from this place to the burying of Mr. Harr in Sullivan County. Twenty three of the number waited until 2 a. m. for the train. The train came and went rushing by leaving the men to wait for the morning train.10
Tombstone inscription for E. H. Harr in old Harr cemetery, Sullivan County, Tennessee reads as follows:
E. H. Harr Born Nov. 4, 1847 Died Sept. 6, 1884 Aged 36 yrs 10 mos 2 days Master of Johnson City Lodge No. 486 Since thou canst no longer stay to cheer me with thy love I hope to meet with thee again in yon bright world above11
Family tradition has that, as a widow, Lummie supported herself and her children by taking in sewing.
In the 1880 Census, Edward was listed as a head of household at Washington Co., Tennessee. He is listed at age 32, occupation as a merchant.. Also enumerated in the household: Columbia Caroline Byerly, Robert Hunter Harr, William Harr, John Ensor Harr, Adelia N. J. Byerly, H. C. Hart, Kate Hart and Bettie Leonard.3
