So many times we come across people on mailing lists or in private email that cannot connect their Judd ancestor. The info on this page can also be applied to searching for any ancestors with any surname.

There is a wealth of free information to be found on the net. All you need to do is search, and for that you will need to know where to search. So my intent on this page is to show you good sites to do your searching.

The information on this page is using the surname Judd as an example, but all you need to do is change the surname to look for another surname. In the case of message boards, you can put in the new name of the message board to look for, and then search that message board. In the case of mailing lists, you can search for other mailing lists for other surnames, as well as states and various counties. There's also message boards for states and counties.

While I don't mind helping other Judd researchers when I can, or have the info, please do not bother to ask me for help or info if you can't take the time to thank me. I am not a paid researcher, all my Judd work and research is voluntary.

leaf BOOKS leaf

There are those who descend from Deacon Thomas Judd (1608 England to 1688 MA) that are interested in a book written by Sylvester Judd in 1856 titled, "Thomas Judd and His Descendants." This book can be found online at 2 places.

leaf Higginson Book Company has the softcover version of the book for $17 plus $3.50 S&H.
    JUDD Thos. Judd & his desc., by S. Judd. 112p. 1856. $17.00
leaf The New England Historical Society has the hardcover version for exactly $10 more. It's also $3.50 S&H.
    Thomas Judd and His Descendants
    Author: Published: Notes:
Sylvester Judd 1856 112 pp. Hardcover. Photocopy.
    Price: $27.00
I have the softcover version and I've been told the hardcover is better. In either event, both books are copied from a master copy that these companies have. I don't know about the hardcover version of the book, but the softcover is copied on acid free paper. The books are printed as they are ordered, so shipping does take some time.

You can do a book search on either of these sites for other Judd related books. I know Higginson Book Co. has a copy of a book on Phillip Judd's descendants for about $44. There's another book written by Sylvester Judd about the town of Hadley, MA, which includes some genealogy on the residents of Hadley.

I like this search for finding any book, whether it be new or used:

These sites have used and rare out of print books, as well as some very expensive family bibles:

leaf THE LDS leaf

The Later Day Saints (Mormons, LDS) not only have family history centers and libraries with tons of info, but they have an online site for searching. While not all of the info or submissions may be correct, it can be a good starting point to find a clue at or a contact to snail mail.

leaf FAMILY TREES leaf

Both Rootweb and ancestry.com have online family trees that were submitted by various people. Access to this at either site is free. Since Rootsweb is now owned by ancestry.com, the majority of the submissions are the same on both sites.

Put in your Judd name (or other name of interest) and let it return the hits. There will be many matches for the surname Judd, especially if you have a common given name, like William or Thomas. Scroll down to the bottom of the page. Now put in whatever additional info you know, like a spouse's name or parent's name. If that brings up no matches, remove info.

leaf MESSAGE BOARDS leaf

Both ancestry.com's and FTM's (Family Tree Maker) website have free surname boards - as well as other boards. Be very careful with any info you might find on these sites as the info could be wrong, or very confusing.

Ancestry.com puts up new databases on a daily basis. While these databases require a subscription to ancestry.com, that isn't the case when they're brand new. You can access them for free for something like the first 7 days:

leaf CENSUS RECORDS leaf

A good deal of these census records have free access. Take note that when working off a transcription, or even a transcribed index, there are mistakes in spelling and other things. So if you can't find your surname, or even the given name, try other possible spellings.

Two of my favorite search engines are google.com and ixquick. Put in the surname or the entire name. While some of the matches are useless, you never know when you're going to find a webpage with some related genealogy info. You can even add in a city, state, county; as well as hunt for other info:
