What is an Ahnentafel?
Literally translated from German as "ancestor table," the ahnentafel starts with one individual, identified as person number one, first generation, and in a narative form shows his parents, father as number two, mother as number three, second generation; third generation grandparents - men are four and six,  and their wives numbers 5 and 7; generation 4, great grand parents, would consist of 4 men and their 4 wives, and the one after that, 16 individuals.  Each generation doubles the great - grandparents.The table is numberered, so that when their are numbers missing, individuals holding those spots are unknown.    The table here only goes back six generations, but in fact can be traced farther back.  Known children are also displayed.  Links will take you my Rootsweb.com information.  A larger table going back 32 generations, with no links, is available here .
