Alligator Joe and a Manatee

Which Joe is which? Particularly in Florida, and especially with Joe claiming to have had something to do with at least four different Alligator farms in Florida, Arkansas and California, I haven't been able to confirm the identity of the men known as "Alligator Joe" on various post cards of the era. So far, no one in the family has turned one up, and it appears Joe and Sadie had no children. The two most certain are the photo on his biography page on this web page, taken from a pamphlet he authored, and the rotogravure which was pasted in Great Grandma's scrapbook. The Joe in the picture above is a portly fellow, somewhat unlike others, but maybe it was a good year - who knows? Could this actually be Walter Douglas Godfrey, who worked for Joe and Sadie, and after Joe's death, married her? He is listed on the 1920 Census as living with them along the St. John's River in Jax, and at 29, was 20 years younger than Hubert; Sadie was 32.
