Milton Tilghman Jacob Ochs

09/27/1922, Allentown Morning Call, p. 5.

Milton J. Ochs dies after short illness - Head of Ochs Construction Company was taken Ill on Friday

Following a short illness, Milton T.J. Ochs, the widely-known builder and contractor, head of the Ochs Construction Company, and one of Allentown's most substantial citizens, died at his residence, 1648 Hamilton Street, Sunday morning at 7:45 o'clock in his 67th year. He took an automobile trip on Friday with Dr. C.D. Schaffer to the latter's farm at Fogelsville, where it is believed he caught a cold which developed into grip. Drs. C.D. Schaffer and Robert L. Schaffer, a son-on-law of Mr. Ochs, were summoned, a trained nurse engaged and the children, some of whom reside out-of-town, were sent for. Complications set in when it was seen that the end was but a matter of time. Mr. Ochs was conscious to within a short time before he expired.

There was general surprise and regret expressed in the business world and among his many friends when announcement was made of the death of Mr. Ochs. Not only prominent and active in building operations in Allentown, but also throughout the Lehigh Valley, Mr. Ochs achieved prominence in his vocation and was responsible for the erection of the largest and most substantial structures in this section. Several years (ago) he suffered a nervous breakdown and since that time was assisted by his sons and a daughter in the management of their operations, but up to the end, he was in active touch with the minutest details of the business. Mr. Ochs was born in Allentown June 6, 1856, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Tilghman J. Ochs, pioneer residents of the First Ward. On his paternal side he was descended from Mathias Ochs who emigrated to this country from Germany early in the eighteenth century, and who was granted a warrant of land in Upper Milford Township, which was then Northampton County, July 2, 1738, the tract comprising 159 acres. Mathias Ochs had a son, Mathias, Jr., who gave valued services to the Colonies and later served in the Revolutionary war, having been a member of Company G, Northampton Militia. He had a son, Jacob Ochs, who also had a son, Jacob, who was the father of Tilghman J. Ochs. Milton T. J. Ochs attended the public schools and the Allentown Business College, under the principalship of the late W. L. Bachman. When quite a young man he became associated with his father in the building and contracting business. The firm was known as Ochs & Son, the son showing great aptitude for business which proved of valued experience in later years. In 1897 the elder Mr. Ochs retired from business the son continuing alone when he erected structures like the Allentown National Bank building, the building development of Palmerton, which included the bulk of the New Jersey (Zinc) Company's plant, the houses for employees and the beautiful Episcopal Church. Many of these buildings stand out prominently and are monument to his skill and enterprise. In 1911 Mr. Ochs organized the Ochs Construction Company, of which he was head and his sons, Harry T., Alfred S. and a daughter, Miss Katie S. Ochs are members. This concern has figured prominently in building operations throughout the Lehigh Valley. It is responsible for the grand stand at Allentown fair grounds, Cedar Crest College, the Colonial Theatre, many buildings at the Bethlehem Steel Company's plant and many of the handsome private residences in Bethlehem.

Although of modest disposition, Mr. Ochs was prompt in the execution of his business obligations and his comprehensive knowledge of the building business made him a valued asset in the community. He was much sought after by men engaged in large enterprises and was most companionable and a lover of sports and music. For recreation from business cares, Mr. Ochs with a few congenial friends sought big game in New Foundland and reminiscenses of trips to that country were most interesting.

Upon one occasion Mr. Ochs related that while many miles from "nowhere" in a New Foundland camp, the news of the shooting of President McKinley came to the party by a wire tapper. The wires of a telegraph company went through the camp and an inspector was there at the time. Having occasion to tap the wire for testing purposes the news of the Mckinley tragedy was secured. Splendid specimens of deer, moose and elk were brought from that country by Mr. Ochs. He was also an ardent fisherman, maintaining a bungelow at Lake Hopatcong, where he spent his summers fishing in that lake, while in the winters he went to Florida, for the same sport in the waters there.

Music was also a hobby with Mr. Ochs. He frequently transposed music for the clarinet on which instrument he was a skilled performer. When the late W. Grossman was leader of the Allentown Band, Mr. Ochs was a student under that director and he was also a member of the band. Mr. Ochs was an extensive reader maintaining one of the finest libraries in this section. When he erected his handsome and spacious home in the west end, he arranged liberally for his library which contains the rarest volumes. He was a member of the Bibliophine Society in Boston, which he prized highly, he with the late Judge Edward Harvey being the only members from Allentown.

He was a member of the Livingston Club, a charter member of the Lehigh County Club and of Greenleaf Lodge, No 561, F. and A.M. In 1876, he married Miss Louisa Oppenlander, of Bucks County, raising a family of fifteen children, only one of whom died, Milton T.J. Ochs, Jr., who died in infancy. Mrs. Ochs and these children survive. They are Miss Katie S. Ochs, Harry T. Ochs, Alfred L. Ochs, Misses Mattie M., Helen G., Nancy I., Frances M., all at home, and Richard P. Ochs, a student at Mercersburg Academy; Mrs. George W. Lutz, Pennsburg; Mrs. Robert Schaffer, Allentown; Erie J. Ochs, Cowell, Calif,; Robert E. Ochs, Bethlehem; Mrs. William H. Hollenbaugh, York, and Miss Esther R. Ochs, New York. These brothers and sisters also survive: Oscar H.E. Ochs, of the Ochs & Frey Brick Company; John V. and C.M.F. Ochs, Allentown; Mrs. Robert Ellis, Philadelphia; Mrs. Ida V. Hamman, and Mrs. Charles C. Vogt, Allentown, and Mrs. E. N. Fritschman, Allentown.

Mr. Ochs was a member of St. John's Reformed Church. The grandchildren who survive are : Irene and Julia Ochs, Colwell, Calif.; Harry T. Jr. and Catherine Ochs, Louise, Alfred L. Jr., Milton and Jane Ochs; Frances and Robert L. Jr., and Charles David Schaeffer, all of Allentown; Mary Louise and Catherine Lutz, Pennsburg.

Tilghman Ochs

Morning Call, Monday, December 8, 1913

Tilghman Ochs Dies Peacefully at His Home

Widely Known Builder Reached Age of 81 Tilghman Ochs, a widely known contractor and builder and one of the most favorably known citizens of Allentown, died at his home, No. 441 Turner St., at 11:30 last evening following a three weeks' illness with organic troubles. Only his strong constitution, for which he was for years remarkable, enabled him to battle his maladies as long as he did. The end came peacefully near midnight, with practically his entire family at his bedside.

Mr. Ochs was a type of the finest citizenship and during a life of more than three score years in this city was identified with the finest and best things in the life of the community. Coming of a vigorous and intelligent family, he in turn became the forebear of a large and study race, the surviving members of which to the fourth generation today numbers forty-four people, highly esteemed in whatever communities they have made their homes.

Vigorous almost to the last, virile in thought and action, an exponent of the out of door life, a deep lover of nature with which he always held deep communion, he was a man who constantly maintained the highest respect and admiration.

In his early days a builder of substantial structures, work in which he took the greatest pride and into which he put the best of his efforts, he was able in his later years to retire to the bosom of the care-free life of the out of doors and to that end for the past ten years spent the greater part of his time, at Lake Hepatcong where he had a cottage. From this place he took long excursions into the woods afoot or passed his time in angling or boating upon the lake. Only a month ago, after a trip that he had planned to be a ten-mile walk into the woods he became lost and only his superior knowledge of woodcraft enabled him to get back in safety to his family in the bungalow where they had already become alarmed at his absence.

No pleasanter memories will be retained by his children than those of excursions into the woods and along the streams and the teaching of the lessons of nature that he had learned by so many years of experience in the life led him to the study of natural history and there was none better familiar than he with the writings of America's greatest naturalists.

Though ready to retire from the bustle of the world he took the keenest interest in its affairs and was well read and deeply conversant with the best thought and work of the day. For many years he was active and devoted to the progress of Salem Reformed Church. He was a Democrat in politics, taking much interest always in that party's fortunes, but constantly refusing to become a candidate at any time for political office.

Mr. Ochs was born on March 1, 1832, upon the farm of his father, Jacob Ochs, Jr., in Northampton County. The Ochs family, which had settled in Northampton County, traced in ancestry in this country to A. Mathias Ochs, who came to America in 1747. [Georgette's note: this can't be correct because the children of Mathias Ochs were born in America. From: Anniversary History Of Lehigh County, Vol 3 Page 968, Ochs Family: On July 22, 1738, Mathias Ochs took out a warrant for land situated in Upper Milford township, then Northampton county, PA. On January 20, 1747, he secured a patent for all his land which amounted to 159 acres.]

Tilghman Ochs attended school near his home as a boy, learned the work of the farm and then when a young man came to this city to learn the bricklaying trade with Jacob Nagle and Joseph Seip. After completing his apprenticeship he was a journeyman for six years after which he went to take up fire-brick laying for twelve years. Then he engaged in contracting work, first taking to the construction of blast-furnace building, then going on upon a large scale in this vicinity. Then he secured contracts for the erection of a number of fine dwellings in this city and leading business structures.

In 1885 he admitted his son, M.T.J. Ochs into partnership with him under the name of T. Ochs and Son and this relation was maintained until 1897 when the father retired. In the course of his contractor experience he built such prominent structures in this city as Hotel Allen, Muhlenberg College, Adelaide Silk Mill, Allentown Spinning Co., the original Breinig and Bachman, the High School and many others. He erected the greater number of the buildings at the Keystone State Normal School (Now Kutztown University) and had a large out of town business.

In 1854 Mr. Ochs was married to Miss Sarah S. Long, of this city, who preceded him in death in 1890. Ten children were born to them, of whom nine survive as follows: Milton Tilghman Jacob, J. Victor, Oscar H. Clinton M., Mrs. Charles C. Vogt and Mrs. Flora Wilson, of this city: Mrs. Lewis Hamman and Mrs. Robert Ellis of Philadelphia and Mrs. W. Bion Fritchman of Freemansburg. There are twenty-six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. John Ochs, of Easton, is a surviving brother.
