He went to New York in 1710 according to Schutler's New York, or in 1722 according to family history; he became collector of Customs of the Port of New York and was a member of the provincial council in 1750. He married Miss Massam and had Arcghibald who became the eleventh Earl of Cassillis. The father died in New York in 1763. The eleventh Earl was Captain in the Royal Navy and had a large estate in New York; his town house was No. 1 Broadway, occupied by General Washington and never returned to him after the War, the office building there now is called the Washington Building !109

"This brings us to our ancestor who left Scotland for Ireland. David Kennedy (1768-1837) wrote in his Bible which has come down to me a short sketch of his family, starting with his great grandfather, Alexander who left Scotland, so the next five generations are from his Bible. Here is what he wrote:" David Kennedy's small sketch of the history of the family he sprang from, with that of his wife, Joanna: my great grandfather was from Scotland by the name of Alexander. He fled from that country in the time of the great rebellion (that would be the rebellion of 1715 in protest over bringing George I to the throne rather than the Stuart Pretender) to Ireland. There John Kennedy, my grandfather was raised and married and had three sons and four daughters; the daughters names are forgotten but the sons were Robert, John and Alexander. Robert was drowned at sea. John died near Philadelphia and left a son by the name John. Alexander, my father was married in Philadelphia, where his wife died; he then married my mother, Mary Thomas in Maryland. She was born and raised in London and married John Thomas and had two children, Thomas and Jane all of whom died. Her maiden name was Tanday. My father had by her Nancy, John, David, Mary and Alexander. She died when I was small. My father then married the Widow Lavin and by her had George, Annie, Joseph, Robert, Nathan and Esther. The family of my wife Joanna, as follows: Her father's name was Edward Moore of Welsh descent; her mother's name was Martha Thomson, both raised in the Jerseys. Their children were as follows: Susan, Salley, Mary, William, Elizabeth, John, Thomas, Martha, Joanna and Edward."
This short sketch of my great grandfather and the data on births, marriages and deaths which follow have been a great help to me in establishing my Kennedy lineage. My "supreme court" in this country, Dr. Arthur Adams and John Kevan mcDowall of Glasgow both agree that the connection seems to them proper; that Alexander kennedy, son of Alexander of Craigoch and Kilhenzie was the Alexander who left Scotland, great grandfather of David. The genealogical authorities in Edinburgh know nothing about what happened to Alexander Kennedy; but in Scotland they lose interest in a man when he departs for Ireland !111 He emigrated in 1715 from Ireland; left with his family when Bonnie Prince Charlie attempted with French aid to restore the Stuarts to the throne of Britain.112
