Stephen Lewis was born in 1793 in the state of Connecticut, according to later census records. His parents remain undocumented as of this writing but according to a biographical entry in "Gallia County, Ohio: People in History to 1980" Stephen's parents immigrated from Ireland in the 1700s. His mother is said to have sold silk and laces on the St. Lawrence River. The biography takes the family through Erie, Pennsylvania; New York state; and ultimately Gallia County, Ohio. Some of this we know to be true. Stephen can be found in multiple Otsego County records beginning with an 1816 deed record through 1830 census records and tax records. It is more than likely that Stephen met and married his wife Mary "Polly" Gardner in New York around 1814, but the date and location remain unconfirmed. Taking family names from a combination of land, deed, and biographical records Stephen and Polly may have had at least ten children named Hannah, Hiram, Nathan G., Sarah, Betsy, Daniel, David, Samuel, Polly, and Martha. By 1835, Stephen and several of his children had started their move West. Stephen can be found on the 1835 New York census for Chautauqua County. In 1839 the Holland Land Company foreclosed on land purchased by Stephen in 1836. By 1840 the family is settled in Gallia county, Ohio near the small community of Porter where many of them would remain throughout their lives.
Stephen led the life of a farmer, growing his crops among the rolling foothills of the Appalachians in southeastern Ohio. His wife preceded him in death and he passed away without leaving a will that would help us document his estate. Stephen is buried next to his wife and other Lewis descendants in the Fairview Road Cemetery in Gallia County, Ohio.
"Steven Lewis was born in 1793 in Connecticut and died at age 57. His parents immigrated from ireland in the 1700's. His mother sold silk and laces on the St. Lawrence River. They came to Erie, Pennsylvania, the New York and finally settled in Gallia County, Ohio, near Campaign.
