My JAMES LEWIS is one of my current "Brick Walls." According to bits and pieces of information I believe this James Lewis came to Craven or Beaufort Counties, NC in the early 1770s from Ulster. I believe one of his sons, Elisha married Ailsie Buck in 1820 in NC. I believe another son was William, b abt. 1804 and there may have been a son, Ransom, a daughter Mary, a son Luther and perhaps other children. William and Elisha, and perhaps other of James' children with families had settled in Posey County, IN in the late 1820s having been briefly in New Albany, IN. I have considerable information from that point forward.

I could really use some help locating this, "missing Lewis."

JAMES LEWIS
The James LEWIS I'm searching for was born about 1730 in East Greenwich, Rhode Island? He married about 1754 in South Kingstown, RI, Waite GOULD, b. June 10, 1736, dau. of William and Penelope GOULD. James and Waite had four children, a son who died in the Revolutionary War on a prison ship; William b. July 10, 1756 (my GGGGGrandfather who married Experience RICE Aug. 10, 1782); Gould, who married 1st, Fanny ALLEN, 2nd, Parmela Williston of West Springfield, MA, and Mary, who married a CHAPMAN. Any information on James and his parents would be greatly appreciated. Bonnie

My most wanted LEWIS is JAMES LEWIS (wife's name unknown) of Kings Cr., Wilkes Co., NC. James LEWIS first appears in the records of Wilkes Co. in 1788 when he is listed on the tax lists and when he purchased a tract of land from Richard and Marget GREEN. In the deed it states that the land had been surveyed for James LEWIS in 1783 even though it was being deeded to James LEWIS by Richard and Marget Green.

Children: 1. George Lewis md. Sarah KERBY ca 1787(8).
2. Mordecai Lewis md. Mary Bardley, Wilkes Co., NC 1801
3. Catherine Lewis md. Joshua Storie, Jr. 1795 Wilkes Co., NC
4. Ruth (Rutha, Ruthey) Lewis md. Robert Story 1800 Wilkes Co., NC
There were other girls unidentified.
Any help on learning where James LEWIS lived before he moved to Kings Cr. most welcome. He may have been the James Lewis of Flat Cr. Rowan Co., NC. James LEWIS of Rowan Co. disappeared from the Rowan Records ca 1788. A GEORGE LEWIS is listed in the same tax dist. as James LEWIS in Rowan Co. in 1783 as one tithe with no land. This George may be the George who md. Sarah Kerby. Any information to help confirm or refute this identity would be most helpful. D. Hugh Puckett

I am searching for any information on JAMES LEWIS of GA and AL who was possiblly married to Frances Malinda Bryant. They had three known children, David Thomas b in 1857, Mary b. 1859 and Felix Sample (my grandfather) b. 1861. I got James' name off of the death certificates of David Thomas and also Felix Samples. Frances Lewis is listed in the Coosa Co., AL 1870 census as being 32 b. in GA with the three children listed above (Thomas, Mary, and Sample). Frances is listed in the 1880 census as being 35 and Felix as 18. The other childlren were obviously gone from home. Frances is listed as a widow in 1870 . I can't find either she or James with the same children in 1860. There is a James Lewis in Heard Co., GA in 1860 married to a Melinda, but the children's names don't match. Any help would be appreciated.

My eternal stumbling block seems to be JAMES LEWIS born 6 Sept 1767 in NC. He married Anne Elizabeth (or Elizabeth Ann or Betsy) STEWART 25 Feb 1786 in Ashe Co NC. She was the daughter of Hannah BOONE (sister of the famous Daniel BOONE) and John STEWART (who was killed by Indians while on expedition with Daniel BOONE).
I have a lot of documentation on the descendants of James LEWIS and Anne Elizabeth STEWART, all the way down to myself, but cannot find proof of parentage of James. Any help would be appreciated.

I haven't been able to trace the ancestry of my JOHN LEWIS-who was married at least twice. One of their children was John Monroe Lewis born est. 1833-1837 who married in Madison Co.,Missouri 13 March 1856 Emeline Sullins and they had 8 children.

JOHN LEWIS was born 22 Nov 1805 in Va. and died 18 JAN 1883 in Randolph Co, Ill. He married Martha Davis POPEJOY in Bedford Co, Tenn. on 26 Nov 1829. The courthouse was burned in the Civil War and all early records are gone. Martha POPEJOY was born in Pittsylvania Co, Va. on 31 Oct 1810. I don't know if John LEWIS was of the Pittsylvania Co. LEWIS family and knew Martha there, or if they met in Bedford Co, Tenn. Their first three children were born around Shelbyville, Bedford Co. Their last nine children were all born in Randolph Co, Ill., where they moved about 1836. Their first two sons were twins, Abraham Lewis, and Edward Abraham Lewis. I suspect that Abraham's middle name was Edward, which was Martha's father's name. Wondering if Abraham was John's father's name - each son having the names of both grandfathers. There is an on-going debate in the POPEJOY circles about Martha and whether she is the 1st or 2nd wife of John LEWIS, and mother or step-mother of his three children. Then a second debate about the three children really being their/his grandchildren.

Father of Planter JOHN LEWIS who lived near Scottsville, Albemarle County, Virginia, & died there 1800. He was m. to Sarah SHELTON. LEWISES, MERIWETHERS AND THEIR KINp. 356 says "The family of John LEWIS, the 'Planter', near Scottsville, Albemarle County, Va., claim a descent from Owen LEWIS, who is supposed to be a nephew or perhaps a younger son of Zachary LEWIS, the emigrant, but we have not record of this." THE LEWIS & KINDRED FAMILIES By McAllister & Tandy p. 148 says "There is no record trace of the father of Planter John LEWIS, but all of the circumstances point very clearly to the conclusion that he belonged to the Zachary LEWIS line, and that he was a son of the first Zachary LEWIS, and brother of the second Zachary who married Mary WALLER.' There may be a 3rd version of his parentage inPIONEER LEWIS FAMILIES, but I have not seen that book. Dianne Conaway Blankenstein

JOHN LEWIS, transcribed in a Family Bible as John F. LEWIS. Born 1786 in Loudoun Co., VA and died October 10, 1822 in Union County, SC. Married Elizabeth Comfort BRUMMITT of Virginia. The couple had three sons: Daniel Brummit LEWIS b. 12/11/1815, William LEWIS, and Robert Nicholas LEWIS b.1817. My great grandmother (and her brothers) stated often that the family were FFVs (not members of the organization) and referred to "Cousin Merriwether." Indeed, Merriwether has been a name used in the family. It has been claimed that William Lewis from N IRE was John's father, but that seems incorrect for several reasons. I am looking for John's parents or proof that he is the son of this William. LaFaye Sutkin

My gggrandmother was deposited by space aliens in Fayette Co., AL about 1850, d. abt. 1918 Latimer Co., OK. Her name was LOVEDAY MCCLOUD LEWIS and the information I have is that she was an only child. She married John MOORE about 1870 and they had three sons: George Washington (my ggrandfather) b. Nov. 1873 Fayette Co., AL, d. Oct. 10, 1918 Lativer Co., OK; Alder Lee b.abt. 1875 Fayette Co., AL, d. 1918?, possibly Latimer Co., OK; Robert Edward Lee b. May 6, 1881 Fayette Co., Al, d. abt. 1960. John is said to have been an older man and died shortly before the birth of Robert. He was apparently on the same space ship as "Lovey" as I have even less information about him. She is said to have remarried several times and her grave is marked "Granny TACKETT" on a sketch of the Moore family plot in Lutie, Latimer Co., OK. I know of no other children born to her. She told of owning slaves and she seems to have inherited the family farm on her parents' deaths. She sold the farm and moved with the boys to Akansas, probably Cleburne Co. before 1890, then she and the two older sons moved to Latimer Co., OK about 1910-1915. Folks, you now know as much about her as I do. Hope someone out there knows more. Dale
