Leyde - Cyrus Leyde Family
  Cyrus Leyde Family Tree

Welcome to the Cyrus Leyde Family Tree!

Family Tree Cyrus Leyde, born about 1833, left his Ohio family and came west to Walla Walla, Washington Territory, in the late 1850s. Records show that he speculated in land values and often made money as both a farmer and in land investments.

He is first noted in the 1860 Walla Walla census as a carpenter.  In 1862 he married Elizabeth Clanton of Milton-Freewater, Oregon, a town nearby, 10 miles from Walla Walla. In 1863 he was elected to the office of Walla Walla County Assessor.

He left Walla Walla around 1869 for a unknown location in Oregon. In 1879 he moved to a new town competing to become the Columbia County seat, Marengo, on the Tucannon River in S.E. Washington Territory.

The town failed in its bid to become the county seat and he left there for Heppner, Oregon, in 1885. With markets at all time low, he left Heppner in about 1895 for another new settlement, Troy, Idaho. While there he speculated on even more real estate transactions, with the last record noted there in 1908, making his fortune as it were, and next we find Cyrus and Elizabeth in the big city of Portland, Oregon. He died there in 1910.

Cyrus and Elizabeth had 12 children, though a hard working group of people, not many records were saved or shared. The following information has been a labor of many years. Many thanks to Randy Leyda and Nancy Leyde who share the passion of preserving the family history.

Nola Leyde

Leyde or Leyda? The family spells the name both ways. Since I am a Leyde, I use that as the preferred spelling, unless the record spells it differently.
