Alexander Norman Glaze

Frances Cullars Glaze

The back of Frances' picture reads,"Mr. A.N. Glaze, Goshen, Ga.
3 miles west of Gohen. Artist make dress black."

It is based on this that the picture is thought to be Frances Cullars Glaze.
The picture was taken by Usher's Gallery,
formerly Gable and Usher, Augusta, Ga.

Alexander Norman Glaze was born in 1843, the son of Thomas Grant Glaze and Permelia Rhodes. He was the grandson of David Glaze and Susannah Norman, and the great-grandson of William Norman. He married Frances Sophronia Cullars. The family lived in the Glaze family home located near Midway Church in the Goshen area of Lincoln County.

A.N. is listed as a Private, March 4, 1862 on the muster Roll of Company E, 9th Battalion, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Tennessee, C.S.A. Lincoln and Wilkes Counties, Georgia Pettus Volunteers. He is listed as serving in Co. H, 37 GA. Surrendered at Greensboro, NC, April 26, 1865. A.N. and Frances are buried in the Glaze Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Midway Church Road, Lincoln County, GA. There are no dates on the headstones. Alexander's headstone states, 37 GA INF CSA

The 1910 census of Lincoln County, Georgia shows that Alexander N. Norman is listed as family #82 head of household, age 67, widower. The next family, #83 is listed as:

Norman, W.E. (William Ellington) Head of Household, age 33, married 9 years
Norman, Permelia, wife, age 64, single (This is wrong, Permelia was A.N.'s sister.)
Norman, Marie, daughter, age 7
Norman, Elsie, daughter, age 5
Norman, Harold, son, age 3
Norman, Ruth, daughter, age1
Norman, Daughter, daughter, age 6/12 months. (This was Lillian who evidently had not been named.)
Norman, Annie, no relationship given, age 31, single. (This was Frances Ann, wife of William E.)

This shows that the census records should not be taken as absolute. They are only as good as the census taker.
