My Story

My Story, My Ancestors, My Treasures

I was born in Ukiah, California in 1938. My father was Isaac Conlee Gibbins, and my mother was Madelyne Lucille (Converse) Gibbins.
What happened in 1938?

I have three very precious children, and 11 beautiful grandchildren, which is the reason for my huge interest in our family history. I want to give my grandchildren a picture of their heritage and hope that some day they will be as impressed with our history as I am. I have had a lot of help from some very special people, too numerous to thank all of them, but my most helpful source has been the wonderful people at The Mormon Library in Sacramento, and The State Library, and The Archives. I feel fortunate that I live in the capitol of California and have these sources close at hand

My mother and father are both deceased and buried in Sacramento, California.

My mother's parents were Gervase Vain Converse, and Sarah Adelyne (Monroe) Converse (my maternal great-grandparents).George and Luticia (Drain) Monroe They are both deceased and buried in Sacramento, California. Grandparents Converse, taken State Fair in Sacramento, Calif.

My Father's parents were, Walter Wall Gibbins and Florence Hessa (Smith) Gibbins. (My Paternal grandparents). Both are deceased. My grandmother Florence, is buried in Cloverdale, California. My grandfather, Walter, is buried in Atascadero, California.Florence Hessa Smith Gibbins,Walter Waldron Gibbins

Anderson Conlee Smith and Sarah Elizabeth Ashby were the parents of my grandmother, Florence. Anderson Conlee Smith Family

The parents of my grandfather, Gervase Converse, as far as I have discovered, are Alden Converse, and Lucy Shepardson. Not positively proven at this time. My mother was born in Sonoma , California, therefore this is a positive proof that they were here, and I have a photo of what I believe to be my great-grandfather with my grandfather and it mentions Oregon, so am sure some Converse there were related. My grandfather, Gervase, was born in South Dakota, 1896.

The Parents of Walter Wall Gibbins, my grandfather, were Isaac Walter Gibbins and Martha Ann (Deweese) Gibbins (my paternal Great-grandparents. Most of my great-grandfather's family were in Clark County, Arkansas. They came here in the 1850's and 1860's. Isaac Walter and Martha Ann Gibbins are buried in Cloverdale, California. Letter from Martha's Mother

The Parents of Isaac Walter Gibbins, my paternal Great-Great-Grandparents, were Samuel Gibbins, born 1794 in Mecklenberg, North Carolina. Samuel married Rachael Crow, born 1802, Louisiana Territory, later they resided in Clark County, Arkansas. Samuel disappeared after the 1850 census was taken in Clark County, Arkansas, and at that time, Rachael, his wife, wanted to come to California for the great gold rush, and Samuel was not in favor of this. I have heard that Samuel was a good bear hunter, and wanted to go hunting once more before leaving for California. Samuel had been injured in a log rolling accident in earlier life, and was subject to memory loss at times. Samuel left for his hunting trip, and was never heard from again! Some speculation is that he was attacked by a bear, as a search party was sent out and a backpack was found in a tree. Some speculate that he was so against coming to California that he just wandered off. Rachael (Crow) Gibbins came to California with most of her children in 1854. Samuel and Rachael are listed as having 15 children, all of whom I have not identified at this time (3/20,2000). Rachael died in 1877, and is buried in Yorkville, Mendocino, California, on what was, or is, the York Ranch. Private ranch, but still accessible, although hard to find. , Rachael Crow Gibbins Grave, Yorkville, California

Parents of Rachael Crow Gibbins were: Benjamin Crow, born circa 1757 and Ann Gregg, Benjamin was a revolutionary war soldier, and is buried in Okalona, Arkansas.Benjamin Crow Grave
