Joseph and Constance Wachowiak, parents of Margaret Wachowiak Moskal resided in Dunkirk, NY. Joseph Wachowiak had a brother Peter and a sister. His sister, Maria Wachowiak was a Nun, Sister Mary Medarda (Maria) Wachowiak was born in Poland on August 6, 1891. She entered the Felician Convent in Buffalo, NY on February 1, 1907 and became a teacher. When her health failed she took a year off from her duties but an influenza epidemic contributed to her death on December 25, 1918. Grandparents, Peter and Rose Litwin, were married on February 10, 1915. They are the parents of Mary, Helen, Joseph, Sophie, Alice, Roman (Ray), Henry and Loretta.Click on each smaller photo to view an enlarged full size image, then use the BACK button of your web browser to return to this page.

As most on the Litwin side are aware, Litwin's Grill and Litwin's Blue Room, at the corner of 6th and Oliver St. in North Tonawanda, started out as a Barber shop and saloon. Peter Litwin (Our Dziadek) was the proprietor. The stories of wives giving their husbands "two bits" for a haircut and the husband coming home with no haircut but a bit "under the weather," have circulated for years. After Peter Litwin's death, Babci Rose (Rusin) Litwin took over with help from Daughter Mary and Mary's husband Tony. Then "Jumbo" Henry Litwin was the mainstay of the family business till his death and the sale of the building. This chip, date unknown, was once presented to customers when someone purchased them a drink and their glass was still filled. It purchased 10 cents worth of drinks, so imagine the "Nickel" beer or the 10 cent "shot." When we lived at 661, three doors away, I (Steve) can vividly remember the iceman coming to deliver ice for the "in bar" cooler and who could ever forget the birch beer pop "on tap" and Uncle Jumbo's Coleslaw with those Friday Fish Fries? This September of 1937 photo was taken near the "Hi-Speed" line in North Tonawanda which is now the south end of Mid-City Plaza. John and Mary Moskal, Steve's Great-Grandparents, show off their wagon and horse. Mary used this rig to pick up John from Buffalo Bolt after a hard days work.
