He came to Pearsall, Texas with his parents in 1883. He always said he walked two-thirds of the way to Frio CO as they came in wagons and took turns walking. He was a carpenter and made molasses. That was quite a job to strip the cane, cut it down, haul it to the mill, squeeze out the juice cook it in a large pan, then put it in buckets or barrels.
