Death Of Nels Anderson

The Independent is called upon this week to chronicle the death of
another of Burt County's pioneer settlers, a successful farmer and
one of the best men the committy has known. Last Saturday evening the
news came that Nels Anderson had had an apoplectic stroke, and a
short time after wards came the news that he had passed over and that
he was hence forth beyond the reach of earthly care and suffering.

Mr. Anderson was born in Skne, Sweden, in Svonskup, September 10,
1839. His childhood and youth were spent in his native country but in
1860 he came to America, settling first at Rockford, Illinois. He
remained here but a month, however, then he moved on to Nebraska, and
settled on a homestead in Burt County. The early days were fraught
with the experiences common to the settler of that period. Mr.
Anderson had little money. He worked on his homestead when he could
and between times he went to Omaha and other places, finding work on
the railroads, in shops, brickyards, or wherever opportunity offered,
to get the necessary money for living expenses. It was a hard life
There were prairie fires in those days. The Indians were not
agreeable, and it seems that in Mr. Anderson's case human
resourcefulness and endurance were put to their utmost test. The
nearest market at first was Fremont, and at times it appears that
prices were extremely low, so that the farmer had extreme difficulty
in disposing of his produce. He hauled corn to Fremont and received
ten cents per bushel but after deducting expense of feeding team, and
the hotel bill not much was loft over for the necessities of life.
But Mr. Anderson with a few others stood by, and in a few years
conditions began to improve. Those who remember Mr. Anderson from
that time speak of him as a man of unusual physical endurance and
strength. He made the best of what ever situation in which he found
himself. He came out ahead and he had the satisfaction of seeing
adequate returns upon the labor invested and tho hardship endured.

In 18x7 he married the wife who survives him with her three children.

Mr. and Mrs. Anderson took deep interest in eluin h work and they
contributed in large measure to the raising of a church in Argo.
Later the building was destroyed by a cyclone, and Mr. Anderson
undertook to rebuild the same practically, contributing both the
necessary labor and funds. The family for many years contributed
freely toward the maintenance of the church work in this place. About
fifteen years ago Mr. and Mrs. Anderson decided to leave the farm in
order to make their home in Oakland. Later they went to Idaho in the
hope of benefitting Mr. Anderson's health but later they returned to
Oakland to spend the remaining days. They were no idlers, however,
and especiallv during the past years Mr. Anderson has spent a great
deal of money. and has worked incessantlv improving their farm
properties, and giving their tenants to dny better homes and better
surroundings than they ever enjoyed themselves while in the farm.

Mr. Anderson's work is done, and it has been extremely well done.
When the call came he had nothing left to complete, he died as one
who has completed his task and rests from his labor.

He was a man of few words, and those who knew him best know that he
saw things in their correct perspectives. He was patient always. He
was always fair. Those who knew him intimately grew to love the
quiet, unassuming man, whose kindness of heart and gentleness of
spirit were very real - very genuine. The extent of his genorositv
and his helpfulness to those whom he thought deserving will perhaps
never be fully known.

Funeral services were held yesterday. After a brief service at the
house the body was taken to the Mission Church and here Rev.
Skoglund, Rev. Peterson, and Rev. Mead each spoke briefly upon the
significance of the occasion and of the life of the man who was being
carried to his last resting place. Interment took place in the Argo
cemetery. Rev. Skoglund and Rev. Mead officiating. And now Nels
Anderson rests in the cemetery laid out upon his own farm. While the
seas come and go, now generations will come to till the soil and
reapt the harvests upon the land he broke and made fit for their use.

Tl ? wife, his faithful companion thru the hardships of pioneer
life, three children, and two sisters are the near surviving
relatives. And all who know him are the friends who will cherish his
memory.hhw

Biographical Album of Northeastern Nebraska
1893

John Ebberson, a farmer of Section 18, range 9, Logan township,
located on an eighty-acre homestead in 1868. He made the usual
improvements for a prairie farm, lived in a dug-out for the first
two years, and then built a story and one-half house. He also
bought eighty acres of Section 7, and improved that, and now has five
hundred and sixty-two acres of land in all. He has a fine
artificial grove on each one of his places; also a good orchard and
small furits.

He of whom we write this biographical notice was born in Sweden
June 6, 1842, and came to Omaha city in 1868, landing May 20, and at
once came on to Dodge County, Nebraska. He was united in marriage
July 3, 1869, to Miss Anna Olson, whose parents had the following
children; Betsy, Bengt, Anna, James, Nels and Hannah.

Our subject and his wife are the parents of three children; Matilda,
born April 3, 1870; Arthur, born August 9, 1873; Olga (deceased)
born June 9, 1875, and died January 13, 1880.

As one views this man's broad acres of well-tiled farming land and
considers how that he had but three hundred and fifty dollars
capital when he came to the country, it is almost needless to add
that his has been a life of industry and frugality.hhw

Death of Mrs. Swen Johnson, Sr.
Inga Ekerson was born in Christanstads Lan, Sweden, December 4,
1828, and departed this life March 28,
1915, at the home of her daughter,
Mrs. Andrew Christenson, having
reached the age of eighty-six years,
three months and twenty-four days.

In 1849, she was united in marriage
to Sven Johnson, who preceded her by
ten years to the great beyond. To
this union were borne nine children,
three of whom, Swen Johnson, Jr.,
Nels Johnson and Mrs. Andrew
Christinason, still survive and all of whom
were with their mother during her
last moments on earth. Surviving,
also, are sixteen grandchildren and
eleven great grandchildren.

In 1869 Mrs. Johnson with her husband and children left their
native Sweden to establish their home in the newer and more
promising America.
In the spring of 1869 they settled on the homestead, eight miles
southeast
of Oakland, that was destined to be the family home for almost a half
century. All the trials and hardships of the early pioneers were
theirs, but
by faithful perseverence they were able to attain to a comfortable
competence for old age.

The funeral was held from the Andrew Christenson home, Wednesday,
March 31st. Interment, was in the Argo cemetery. The funeral service
was conducted by Rev. Harry Johnson of Chicago, grandson of the
deceased,
the sermon being preached from Haggai 2:3,4.hhw

Account of Johnson Accident

Though we gave a short account of the terrible accident that befell
Will Johnson and was of the Argo neighborhood last week, it was not
as thorough as it may have been, so we are publishing the account
of the accident as given in the Oakland Independent;

"When William S. Johnson, 7 miles south of Craig, in the Alder
Grove neighborhood, was mowing the lawn about the house, he noticed
that the gas engine on the washing machine Mrs. Johnson was using
had stopped. He left the team standing and went to again start the
engine. In some way the horses became frightened and start to run.
They ran toward his little son, Leonard, 3 1/2 years old, and Mr.
Johnson tried to reach him in time to save him from being cut by
the sickle, but reached him just in time to become entangled
himself in the machine. Both legs of the son were cut off above
the ankle and Mr. Johnson's right arm between the elbow and wrist,
also the thumb of his left had, the flesh on the upper part of his
right leg from the knee to the crotch was laid open to the bone,
when it seemed that the horses must have turned and again struck
him, this time cutting off one toe.

"Mrs. Johnson had a hard time summoning help, calling some half a
dozen parties before anyone could be found.

First aid was given by some of the neighbors and Dr. Pratt, who had
been summoned from Craig, and this was the only thing that had
saved their lives. The injured were rushed to an Omaha hospital
where they were reported to be doing as well as could be
expected.hhw

Admah Pioneer Resident is Summoned by Death

Mrs. Ingrid Alice Nelson, Nee Casper, a pioneer resident of the
Admah community for more than fifty years, passed away on Thursday
at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Carl Walters in Omaha, aged 74
years 8 months and 4 days.

The deceased was born March 17, 1855, in Espinge, Sweden, where she
was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. In the year
1878, she was united in marriage to John Nelson, who passed away at
the family home in Admah on February 11, 1909.

Seven years ago, Mrs. Nelson suffered a stroke of paralysis, and
since that time she has been at Omaha where she was tenderly cared
for in the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walters. She was a most
patient sufferer through the long years, and cheerfully and
uncomplainingly bore her affliction with Christian fortitude. She
was especially happy in the visits from her children and old
friends, and each summer looked forward to several visits to her
old home at Admah.

There remain to mourn her passing two sons, John, of Admah, and
Rudolph, of Lyons; and six daughters, Emma (Mrs. Sandstedt) and
Minnie, of Chicago; Althea (Mrs. J. Nelson) of Hershey; Olga (Mrs.
Victor Nelson) of Winner, S. D.; Hannah (Mrs. Swan Nelson) and
Valera (Mrs. Carl Walters) of Omaha. Seventeen grandchildren and
six great-grandchildren.

A brief funeral service was held at the Walters home in Omaha on
Friday, after which the remains were taken to Oakland, and the
final formal service was held on Sunday afternoon at the Elim
Lutheran church in Swaburg, of which she had been a member.

The pastor, the Rev. Arnold Thoren, had charge of the service and a
mixed quartet furnished the singing. By request, Mrs. Arnold
Thoren and Miss Luella Sampson sang a duet number "Beyond the
Smiling and the Weeping."

Following the service at the church the funeral cortege wended its
way to the Argo Cemetery for interment in the family lot here. The
pall bearers were Harry Anderson, Otto Olson, Edwin Monson, Alfred
Feer, Andrew Hoganson and Albert Soderling.hhw

quartet sang "Face to Face" and "No Night There," and a male
quartet composed of Messrs. Christensen, Andersen, Carl Olson and
Maynard Andersen sang "Going Down the Valley." Miss Helen Monson
presided at the organ and also accompanied the singers. The floral
offering was profuse and the services were very largely attended.
Interment was made in the family lot in the Argo cemetery. The
pall bearers were Gottfred Monson, Anton Monson, Edwin Monson,
Chris Christensen, Will Grothe, Harry Grothe, Lambert Anderson and
Fred Linden.

The deceased was born in Sweden January 29, 1867, and had attained
the age of 66 years, 5 months and 13 days. He emigrated to America
in 1887 and in 1896 was united in marriage to Miss Amanda Johnson
and they established the family home in the Argo vicinity.

Mr. Olson was widely known throughout the community. Being honest
and upright in all his dealings his splendid character gained for
him the highest respect and esteem of all. He was stricken with a
heart affliction seven years ago, and last fall suffered a
recurrence of the malady. His death, however, came unexpectedly,
as he had arisen as usual that morning, partaken of a hearty
breakfast, and attended to a few tasks about the home. He suddenly
collapsed on the way to the house, and when Mrs. Olson reached him,
he had passed peacefully into the long sleep.

Besides the wife, he is mourned by one son, Arthur, residing on the
home farm, and by two grand children, two small children preceded
him in death. He is also survived by one brother, John A. Olson,
of St. Joseph, Missouri, and two sisters, Mrs. Hanna Young, of
Pender, and Miss Anna Olson, of Omaha.hhw

A Pioneer is Summoned

Was a Stage Driver before the Days of Railroads

George Washington Richardson died at his home seven miles southeast
of Oakland last Saturday morning, August 24, 1918, at the age of 71
years, 6 months and 2 days.

Mr. Richardson was born in Cleveland, Ohio, Feb. 22, 1847. When he
was two years old he moved with his parents to Defiance, Ohio. At
the age of sixteen he enlisted in the 3rd Ohio Regiment, Company K,
and served 19 months in the Civil war under General Herman at
Edgeville, Tenn.

In 1867 he moved to Omaha, Nebr. He accepted a position as stage
driver and for several years drove a stage between Blair and Omaha,
Calhoun to Omaha, and from Herman to Tekamah and Decatur.

He was married to Miss Anna Margaret Daubert at Tekamah on Dec. 2,
1875. After residing in Omaha for five years they with their two
eldest children, Mrs. Albert Wagner and Mrs. Charles Davidson,
located in the vicinity of Argo, where they have lived the past 37
years.

Mr. Richardson untied with the Congregational church of Argo on
July 5, 1906. He was a faithful attendant and an active worker in
the church and Sunday school, being Sunday school superintendent
for several years, until his health failed him. He remained a
faithful follower of Christ until death came. He realized his time
was short and sought the consolation of his faith. He had chosen
his favorite passage of Scriptures from which Rev. O. Reger
preached the funeral sermon, which was from John 3:6-16.

Mr. Richardson had been a sufferer for several years, his illness
being superinduced by partial paralysis. Death came peacefully and
he was soon in that Great Beyond where there shall be no more
sorrow, nor suffering. He had been a good neighbor, and indulgent
husband and father.

He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and five children, Mrs. Albert
Wagner of Hooper, Nebr., Mrs. Chas. Davidson, Omaha, Nebr., Mrs.
Geo. Wagner, Craig, Nebr., and Miss Della Richardson at home; and
one sister, Mrs. E. R. Phelps, of Defiance, Ohio. Also eight
grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at the home and the Argo church last
Monday, by Rev. O. Reger of Uehling. Pallbearers were P. N.
Soderling, E. Brokaw, J. G. Meyer, Henry Uehling, Henry Egbers and
Nels Martenson.

The remains were followed by a large cortege of sorrowing
relatives.hhw

Funeral of Pioneer Held at Argo Monday

Mrs. Anna Margaret Richardson, nee Daubert, was born July 12, 1852,
in Gumpelstadt, Duchy of Saxe, Meiningen, Germany. She died in her
home at Argo, Dodge county, September 27, 1929, at the age of 77
years, 2 months and 15 days, after an illness of more than a year's
duration.

In the year 1864 she came to America with her parents and two
brothers, Fred and Henry, Fred preceded her in death in 1908. The
family settled for a short time in Dodge county, Wisc. In the year
1873 they set out in a covered wagon for Nebraska, settling in
Logan township, Dodge county. She was baptized and confirmed in the
Lutheran church, later uniting with the congregational church at
Argo, being a deaconess of that fellowship at the time of her
death.

On December 2, 1875, she was united in marriage to Gorge W.
Richardson at Tekamah, Nebr. After residing in Omaha for five
years, they with their two eldest children, located near Argo,
which has been her home since. To those who knew her best she was
a devoted wife, a loving mother, a faithful friend and neighbor.
She was left in widowhood by the death of her husband in 1918.

She leaves to mourn her loss her 5 children, Mrs. Albert Wagner,
Hooper; Mrs. Charles Davidson, Omaha; Mrs. George Wagner, Craig;
Mrs. Edw. Phillippe, Hooper; and George E., living on the old home
place; one brother, Henry, of Omaha, and fourteen grandchildren and
two great grandchildren.

Services were held at the home on Monday, Sept. 30, at 1:15 and at
the church at 2, her pastor, Rev. C. L. Hammond of Uehling
officiating. Scriptural text chosen was one that had always been
very dear and comforting to her, John 14:1-2. A quartet consisting
of Mildred Engdahl, Marian Anderson, Emil Christensen and Harry
Stromquist, with Mrs. R. Marek at the organ, sang very feelingly,
"The City Four-square," "Going Down the Valley" and "My Jesus, I
Love Thee."

A very great concourse of relatives friends and neighbors gathered
to honor the memory of this pioneer settler and beloved Christian
woman and stood about the graveside in the beautiful God's Acre at
Agro as the last tender words of hope and consolation were uttered.
Banks of beautiful flowers covered the casket and witnessed to the
assurance of the life unending beyond the grave. After the
benediction the quartet softly sang the great hymn of resigration,
"Nearer My God to Thee," as the mourners turned from the grave.hhw

Obituary

Victim of Cancer

J. A. Vedell died at his home in this city last Saturday, following
a chronic trouble with which he had been afflicted for a year or so
past, an incurable cancer. In his last days he suffered terrible
pain but he bore his affliction with great foritude, resigned to the
will of his Creator.

Mr. Vedell came to Nebraska from Iowa several years ago and
purchased the Henry Daubert farm, just over the county line in Dodge
County, paying what was then the record price, $90 an acre. He held
it until about a year ago, when he disposed of it at $150 an acre,
came to Oakland and bot a residence property here with the intention
of making this city his home. Mr. and Mrs. Vedell moved into their
property this spring.

Funeral services were held last Wednesday at the late home, Rev.
Wallis, of the Methodist Church preaching a sermon from 11, Cor.
5:1, "For we know that if the earthly house of our tabernacile be
dissolved, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands,
eternal in the heavens." The funeral cortege then moved on to Argo,
where the mortal remains were laid to rest in the cemtery.

Mr. Vedell was born in Westergtland, Sweden, December 22, 1861;
came to America and arrived at Exxex, Iowa, at the age of twenty two
years, and eight years ago to Dodge County, Nebraska. He leaves to
mourn his passing a wife and two daughters, an aged mother, a
brother and sister in Sweden, and a brother in Belvidere, Ill.hhw

died Monday morning at her home on south Thomas Avenue following a

there on March 13, 1891. The young couple then farmed for
fourteen years at Essex, Iowa and moved to Nebraska once more to
farm in the Argo neighborhood, East of Uehling. There they made
their home for eight years. In 1914 the Vedells retired to their
