Obituary

The Hooper Sentinel
January 4, 1900

Buer - Gerhard Frederick Buer was born in Hanover, Germany, Nov.
29, 1816, and died at the home of his son in Hooper, Nebr., Jan.
3rd, 1900 at the age of 83 years, 1 month and 4 days, of Bright's
disease, after an illness of about 4 weeks.

His boyhood and youth were spent in his native country, but in 1858
he emigrated to the United States, settling in Indiana where he
made his home until 1884 when be removed to Dodge county, Nebraska,
to make his home with his son, John F. Buer, and where he lived
until his death.

Grandfather Buer was naturally strong and healthy, and until about
4 weeks ago his health had been considered good, but the
infirmities of age were slowly but surely undermining his splendid
constitution and he was suddenly stricken down. His sickness
developed so quickly and was so painful that his attending
physicians decided on an operation, but even this would not do and
his strength was not sufficient to combat the disease and burden of
many years and he sank slowly but steadily until the summons came
to "cross the dark river."

He leaves of his immediate family but one son, John F. Buer, who
with his wife, 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren will mourn
his loss.

In religion Mr. Buer was a member of the German Evangelical
Lutheran church and his funeral services will be conducted by his
pastor Rev. Bergt from the home to the German Luth-church in Hooper
at 1 o'clock (tomorrow) Friday afternoon. The interment will be in
the German cemetery north of town.

History of The Elkhorn Valley
Page 527

John F. Buer, residing at Hooper, came to Dodge County, in the
spring of 1870, and located in what was then known as Logan
Precinct of Dodge County, where he took a homestead of eight acres,
upon which he made good improvements, and lived for about six
years, and kept adding to his land, until he had two hundred and
forty acres. At the time of his coming, his nearest neighbor was
one and a half miles away. In 1885, he moved from his place to
Hooper, where he was elected constable, collector and also Marshall
of the town. He also engaged at auctioneering, which he has
followed more or less for ten years, during which time he has
served as deputy sheriff of Dodge County for one and one-half
years.

Our subject was born in Germany, September 24, 1848, the son of
George and Mary Buer, natives of Germany, whose three children
were; Henry (deceased); Mary and John F. Our subject was ten years
of age when he came from Germany. They landed at Baltimore in
1858, and from there went to Jackson County, Indiana, where the
family remained and where he remained until he was twenty years of
age and came to Dodge County, Nebraska, where he has since lived.

He had a common school education, and was united in marriage
October 1, 1871, to Lizzie Trimple, the daughter of Gerhart and
Alesa (Weebold) Trimple, natives of Germany, whose three children
were; Lizzie, George and Hannah.

Our subject and his wife are the parents of eight children, born in
the following order; Lizzie, August 14, 1870, Louise, July 14,
1875; John, May 20, 1887; George, July 3, 1881; Hannah, June 1,
1884; Martin, August 27, 1886; Henry, July 16, 1889, and Alla,
December 22, 1891.

Politically, our subject affiliates with the Democratic party, and
in religious matters is a Lutheran. Being among the early settlers
of the county, it was his ill fortune to be in the country when the
grasshoppers made such sad havoc.

Herbert Frese Called

Death entered the home circle of Rev. H. C. Julius Frese, pastor of
the St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran church, northwest of town,
Monday, September 6, and took therefrom the son and brother,
Herbert, aged 9 years and 10 days. Master Herbert's death occurred
at the Fremont hospital to where he had been taken last week
Wednesday, and was caused by acute inflammation of the pancreas.
His illness dates back but two weeks when he complained of pains in
his legs. At first nothing much was thot of it, but the pains
gradually increased and went up higher into his body. All that
could be done by medical skill and loving hands was to no avail,
death coming to relieve him of his sufferings. Rev. and Mrs. Frese
were with their son when the final summons, the former having gone
down with Herbert to the hospital and Mrs. Frese being summoned on
Thursday when it was seen that life on this earth would not be
long.

Herbert, who had just passed his ninth birthday, was born on the
church premises of which his father is pastor, on August 26, 1911.
His short span of life had been spent out there and during this
time he had endeared himself to all who knew him. His death cast a
gloom over that community and the heartfelt sympathy of the friends
of the family goes out to them in their time of sorrow. Besides the
parents he leaves to mourn his untimely loss two brothers and two
sisters, Alfred, Elmer, Lydia and Else. The body was brought home
Monday evening. Funeral services will be held at the family
residence at 1:30 this afternoon and later at the church. Rev. H.
Pflug of Scribner conducting the services. Interment will be made
in the church cemetery.

Herman F. Havekost Dead

The community was greatly shocked to learn of the death of Herman
F. Havekost, one of our most prosperous and prominent young
farmers, at his home east of Hooper Sunday afternoon.

He was fist taken sick last Wednesday evening, he grew much worse
Thursday and after a consultation of doctors a surgeon was summoned
from Omaha and he was operated upon for appendicitis Friday
evening. The case was a very critical one and no hopes were
entertained for his recovery, although everything medical skill
could do was resorted to that his life might be saved.

Mr. Havekost was born, Sept. 25, 1879, and has resided in this
vicinity during his entire life time. He was married to Miss
Eliese Krueger, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chris Krueger, on February
10, 1904, and to them were born three children, two sons and a
daughter, who with the grief stricken wife are left to mourn his
untimely departure. The parents of the deceased are Mr. and Mrs.
Herman Havekost, residing north of this city, and he also leaves
several brothers and sisters.

Until about two years ago Mr. Havekost lived on the home place with
his parents, he than purchased the Siebrasse farm, east of Hooper,
on which he has made extensive improvements and arranged into a
model country home. He was held in the highest esteem by the
entire community and was considered one of the foremost
agricultural men in this section of the country.

Funeral services were held yesterday morning at 10 o'clock from the
German Lutheran church, east of Hooper, conducted by Rev. Lang, and
interment was made in the German Lutheran cemetery north of town.

November 29, 1928

Pioneer Settler Called By Death Last Thursday

Casper Hoegemeyer, one of the pioneer settlers of this community,
passed away at 10:25 Thursday morning, November 22, 1928, at his
farm home 3« miles northwest of Hooper. Death followed an eight
months illness from kidney and heart trouble, and though his health
failed rapidly during this time, yet Mr. Hoegemeyer kept up his
courage and tried to be up and around as usual every day until his
strength failed him, and the sleep that knows no awakening finally
came to him.

His death removes from this community a man highly respected by his
fellowmen, one, who as a pioneer staked his all on the future of
this country and eventually saw his faith in the country rewarded
through hard work with a number of fine and properties. As a
pioneer he suffered and endured the trials of the early days, but
his faith never faltered and he proved himself to be one the
successful farmers of the locality. He was an active man up to his
last, and always took a particular interest in matters that were
for the betterment of the community.

Mr. Hoegemeyer had attained the age of 79 years and eight months,
having been born on March 22, 1849, in Germany. In 1869 when a
young man of 20 years he came to the United States, coming west by
rail to Council Bluffs, Iowa, and then by boat to Washington county
where he worked as a farm hand for a couple of years. In 1871 he
took up a homestead in Dodge county later buying the farm northwest
of Hooper and since had been a resident of the county. On July 11,
1873, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Stork. To this union
eight children were born, a son, Henry, dieing in infancy. The
living children are William of Scribner, August and Mrs. Henry
Heitshusen of Lyons, Casper of Dodge, Christ, Mrs. Emil P. Miller
and George of Hooper. Mrs. Hoegemeyer died September 6, 1914, and
since then Mr. Hoegemeyer has made his home with his son, George.

The funeral was held Saturday afternoon, with services at 12:30 at
the late home and at one o'clock from the St. Johns Lutheran church
of which the deceased was an active member. The Pastor, Rev. Theo.
Norden, spoke the words of comfort to the sorrowing relatives and
to the large gathering of neighbors and friends who filled the
church to overflowing to pay their last tribute to the memory of
one who had always held their utmost esteem. Interment was made in
the church cemetery.

Hooper NE Hi Harry, I was looking at the listing for St. John's Cemetery at Hooper, NE and saw the obituary for Henry F. Horst and his wife Anna Horst. For Anna Horst, you were looking for more information. I can fill in some details on her. She was a niece of John Christian Schulenberg that is also buried in the St. John's Cemetery at Hooper, NE. I believe her parents and most of her brothers and her sister are buried at the Scribner, NE cemetery. Anna Adaline Gerhardine Schulenberg was born 17 April 1892 at Babbtown, Osage County, MO. She was the daughter of Bernhard Dietrich Heinrich Schulenberg and Bertha Dorathea Johanna Ahlers. Anna married Heinrich F. Horst on 27 May 1915 at the St. John's Lutheran Church at Babbtown, MO. This information is from the Church Record Book at Babbtown. Babbtown was a small German community centered around the church. When the railroad came through that part of the country, it was not built near Babbtown, but closer to the river. People began building a community near the railroad, and that place became the town of Meta. Babbtown and Meta are only about 4 miles apart. Most of the Babbtown families came from several small communities near Oldenburg, Germany. There seems to be a strong connection between the families at Babbtown/Meta and the Hooper area. Many of the families that started at Babbtown later moved to the area around Hooper. Note: Richard Mueller sent this e-mail to me on 11-7-2006. He had an artificial grove of five acres and a small orchard on his place. In 1883 he sold out and moved to Hooper and engaged in merchandising for one year, when he sold and bought the farm which he now occupies, which consists of four hundred and sixty-four acres of partly improved land. He has a good class of farm buildings including barns, granary and double-cribs; also a grove of five acres and an orchard of seventy five trees. He commenced in Dodge County without one dollar's worth of property and during the grasshopper years they destroyed nearly his entire crop. Not having any oats he was compelled to feed his horses wheat. Christian Kroger was born in the German Empire, December 1844, the son of John and Sophia Kroger, natives of Germany, who had a family of six children; John Jr., Sophia, Christian, Catharine, Christopher and Mary, all of whom are living. He remained in his native land until twenty-four years of age, during which year he landed in New York, and from there came direct to Nebraska. His early advantages for an education were good. Mrs. Christian Kroeger passed away last Thursday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Chris Schulenberg, after a long illness which was complicated and rendered more serious by her age. Sophia Roggensack was born Sept. 8, 1850, in Mecklenburg, Schwerin, Germany, and came to America with the parents at the age of 6 years. The family first settled at Chicago where they remained for three years when they came to Nebraska locating near West Point. Later her parents took a homestead one mile north of Hooper, the farm on which Harry Kroeger resides. His widow continued to make her home in Hooper until about four years ago when she went to live with her children until her death at her daughter's home on December 27, 1928, at the age of 78 years, 3 months and 19 days.
