- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Washinton County History James Andersen James, son of Andrew and Mary (Hansen) Petersen, was born in Venslov, Soro County, Slagelse, Sjaelland, Denmark, on September 13, 1848. He and all but two of his thirteen brothers and sisters, their spouses, and families - along with the parents - came to America in the 1870's or thereabouts, and settled in Burt and Washington Counties. However, for a time James was engaged in railroading in Wyoming. Maren Sofie Andersen was born in Flemtoft, Denmark, on September 14, 1859, to James and Anna Andersen. She came to America with her parents in 1868, settling near Admah, Washington County, where she lived until her marriage. Rev. A. M. Andersen united James and Mary in marriage on December 29, 1878, at Clark Creek in Burt County with Christian and Karen Andersen, his siser, as witnesses. James started farming in Burt County about 1889, and this is where they made their home. Grandsons LeRoy and Alvin Olsen still farm there. The first homestead house is still there, although the larger home was moved in. Andrew Petersens had many children farming in Burt and Washington counties, but James was the last and only one to stay on a homestead site. All of the others eventually moved to Blair, Ruskin, Racine, Colorado, North Dakota, or Canada. There were five children born to this unuon: Albert George, who died at age five, Mrs. James (Ella) Olsen; Albert James; Julius; and Mrs. Alfred (Marie) Andersen. There are two grandsons. A stroke of paralysis, suffered on January 17, brought on the direct cause of Mary's death four days later on Januray 21, 1918, at only age 58. James died on April 21, 1929, following a lengthy illness from ailments incident to old age, but not until after he had attained an age somewhat over eighty. Anderson, aged 27 years 10 months and 4 days, son of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Anderson of the Admah neighborhood, ten and a half miles northeast of Hooper. Death occurred at the Wise Memorial hospital, Omaha, where Mr. Anderson had been for the past two months receiving treatment for nephritis under government care, he having served in the army during the recent World war. Mr. Anderson was born at Admah on May 16, 1893, and that neighborhood has always been his home and among whose people he has been known as a young man of sterling worth and character. He was known and highly esteemed by all, and his death brings a sorrow to the friends and neighbors as well at to the immediate family. In the late war he was called to the colors September 23, 1917, leaving Tekamah for Camp Funston, Kans. for training as private in Co. K. 355th infantry. He was later transferred to Co. C. 137th infantry, 35th division, serving with this company throughout its twelve months' stay in France. He went through the Argonne battle and other conflicts. He received his discharge from service July 22, 1919, returning to the farm home at Admah. During all this time the gassing received in service had been bothering him and about two months ago he was taken to Omaha to secure relief. The government all this time looked after his care, and he also was receiving a disability pension payment. The remains were brought to Hooper Tuesday morning and taken out to the Anderson home in Admah, where funeral services were held at one o'clock that afternoon, and also at the Admah Danish Lutheran church. The services were conducted by Rev. Hald of Davey and Rev. Petersen of Fremont. Six members of Cornelius Tillman post, No. 18, American Legion of Hooper, acted as pallbearers. Interment was made in the church cemetery. The services were largely attended by those who came to pay their last respects to one whom had grown up among them as a man well thought of. His death brings deep sorrow to the parents, one brother, Alfred, and four sisters, Mrs. Louis Petersen, Mrs. McBroom and Misses Emma and Anna. Their bereavement is consoled if such can be, by the true heartfelt sympathy of all in this community. Christena Spouse 2 = Ane Marie Madsen (1888) born 1837 The Washington County History Hans Christiansen Hans Christiansen, a harness maker by trade, was born in Sjaelland, (Zealand) Denmark, September 13, 1825. His wife, Christine, was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, November 19, 1833. Their only child, our father James Robert, was also born in Copenhagen, September 3, 1859. After service in the Danish-German War our grandfather decided to migrate to America to seek a better life for his family. They arrived in Omaha in 1863 and moved on to Utah by ox-train, reaching Salt Lake City before winter. Christine walked the 1,100 miles, sometimes carrying their son. Disapponted and disillusioned by Utah, Hans worked in mines up in the mountains until he had enough money for a team of oxen, a wagon and provsions to take Christine and James Robert back to Omaha. They left Utah in the spring of 1865 and arrived in the fall. It was a long and dangerous journey for the little family through hostile Indian territory. Back in Omaha, Grandfather worked in the railroad yards and Grandmother fed borders until they accumulated enough money to begin farming. In 1869 they filed a claim on eight acres. This became the Homestead. Later, nintey acres were purchased from the railroad and were always called 'the railroad land.' Our maternal grandmother, Valtabor Larson, was born in Norway, December 2, 1824, and died July 2, 1916. As a young widow with two small daughters, Sarah and Elizabeth, our mother, she accompanied her brothers and sisters and their families to the United States. They settled near Huxley, Iowa. Later, she and her daughters moved to Burt County, just north of Washington County. During the early years on the Homestead the nearest store and post office was Fontanelle, eight miles away. Each week Christine walked across the meadows, lacking roads, to get the mail and a few groceries. The long walk to Utah had trained her for this 'short walk.' Later, the Admah store and a blacksmith shop were built close-by. When she died September 27, 1876, there was no cemetery near so she was buried on the Homestead but was moved to the West Admah Cemetery when it was established. When Grandpa Christiansen remarried, Father went to work for the railroad and helped lay the first rails from Fremont to the Wyoming border. After he returned home his father and stepmother purchased a farm near Oakland, Nebraska, on which they built and operated a store until Grandpa's death, March 25, 1901. Meanwhile, our parents, James Robert Christiansen and Elizabeth Larson, had met and were married September 12, 1885. They lived on the Homestead until Father died July 24, 1922. The Homestead is now owned by his son, E. R. Christiansen. As a boy our father attended Hewett School District 17 which, in turn, all of his children attended. For may years he served as Director of this said school. He was also Justice of Peace and was township assessor until his death. Grandpa and Grandma Christiansen found the better life they were seeking right here in Nebraska. E. R. He came to the United States in March, 1863, reaching Salt Lake City that fall. Early in the spring of 1865 he left Utah with ox- team for Omaha, Nebr., arriving there late in the fall of the same year. He lived in Omaha until the spring of 1869, when he moved with his parents to a homestead in Sheridan and took a prominent part in the upbuilding of the county, and in his active days was a leader in the prohibition movement. He was a man of high ideals, a thoroughly Chris- precinct, Washington county where he has since made his home. In 1886 he was married to Elizabeth Larson and to this union ten children were born, two of whom died in infancy. Besides many friends who esteemed him as a man of honest, upright character, he leaves to mourn the loss of a kind, affectionate husband and father, his wife, five daughters - Mrs. N. A. Greenwood, Craig; Mrs. Carl Hanson, Lyons; Mrs. T. W. Petersen, Herman; Ella and Lillie at home - and three sons, E. R., living near, and Calvin and William at home, and two granddaughters. The funeral was held at the home at 2 o'clock last Wednesday, the services being conducted by Rev. James Petersen, pastor of the Admah Lutheran church. He was buried at the West Admah Cemetery. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Washington County History Page 152 Edwin Dam Edwin W. Dam and Lucinda M. Busch were married September 26, 1937 at Zion Lutheran Church in Hooper, Nebraska. We live on the 80 acre farm where Edwin was born in 1907, in the northwest part of Washington County, Sheridan Township. The farm was purchased in early 1900, when buying land was a sacrifice. There were few buildings at that time, but it was home amidst a beautiful grove of shade and fruit trees. I was born only two miles south, the oldest daughter of Fred and Orphia (Armstrong) Busch. Edwin remembers the time I came with my Dad and sister to get apples one summer, and claims he looked at me then when I was only seven! I don't remember it. As years went by, my family moved to Dodge County where I attended grade school and graduated from Hooper High School. Our paths never crossed again until 1936 when a romance began and we were married the following year. Edwin began farming when he was thirteen, due to his father's ill health. He used three horses on a walking plow and walking cultivator, and recalls hauling sand in a box wagon with four horses, from Winslow, Nebraska in 1925 when a horse barn was built. It cost $1,295.00 then and still stands, being reroofed only once after 53 years. At one time it served as a milking barn and now is a farrowing barn for sows. The original home was added onto by his parents, and at the time of our marriage the older part was removed and a two-story of four rooms was built. A completely new home was built in 1970. The old house was sold and moved away. Edwin's occupation has been farming and livestock feeding. He started by feeding two calves and gradually increased over the years. He was honored in 1976 for having been a shipper to the Omaha stockyards for 50 years. We have both been active in the community, Edwin served as director of Hewitt school for twelve years, served on Farmers Union board, and was a 4-H leader and assistant leader. I was also a 4-H leader a number of years, belonged to an Extension club in Hooper, and taught Sunday school for over twenty years. I served various auxiliaries of the Redeemer Lutheran church in Hooper where we are members. We both serve as officers on West Admah Cemetery Association and presently belong to Danish Brotherhood lodge 206 of Blair. We have one son James E. born in 1939. He is married to Alice Wittman, daughter of Wallace and Hilda Wittman of the Hooper area. They have four children, Dwight born in 1962, Virginia born 1964, David born 1967, and Eric born 1975. James and his family reside on the former Hewitt farm purchased in 1955, and a new home was built in 1966. James has taken over the farming, now amounting to 920 acres, and livestock operation of feeding cattle and rasing hogs. We enjoy our semiretirement living in the country having a garden and flowers, and watching the crops grow. This has been our life. Submitted by Mrs. Edwin Dam. ![]()

Dam on Jan. 30 Town friends, in common with the country friends of the James C. Dam family, of northeast of Hooper, were grieved last Thursday morning when word was heard that Mr. Dam had passed away about five o'clock the evening before from an affliction of heart trouble and complications. He had been in failing health for about three years but not ill enough to keep him bedfast any length of time and on the day of his death he had been up and around as usual. Tho he had suffered a recurrent attack from his malady that day his condition was not considered dangerous and when death came to him it came as a sudden shock to relatives and also friends. His death removed from the Admah community one of its most highly respected resident. James Christian Dam, was born in Skandeborg, Denmark, on December 25, 1872, and departed this life on January 30, 1929, at the age of 70 year, 1 month and 5 days. When a young man he came to this country and after spending some years in the vicinity of Fremont he returned to Denmark where on March 29, 1893 he was united in marriage to Marie Dam, after which they came to this country to make their home. They spent a few years at Fremont and then moved to a farm in the Argo locality, where they lived for 9 years. Later they purchased the farm on which the family has now lived for the past 24 years. He was confirmed and brought up in the Lutheran faith at an early age, and has always been faithful to his church. Since coming to this country Mr. Dam has prospered in his agricultural pursuits, became a man well liked among his fellowmen and was one it was a pleasure to have as a friend. He, also, was active in the affairs of his neighborhood and his passing is sincerely regretted by the many acquaintances he had made while living among us. He leaves to mourn his departure his wife and four children, Mrs. Anton Petersen of Hooper, Mrs. J. K. Larsen of Davey, Mrs. W. R. Christiansen of Herman, and Edwin at home; three grandaughters, two sisters in Denmark and one brother in Indiana. A son preceded him in death The funeral was held Saturday afternoon with services at one o'clock at the home and at two o'clock from the Danish Lutheran church near Admah, with Rev. J. C. Dam came to America from Jutland, Denmark, as a young man, after serving his country in the Danish army and as a guard for the King. He worked his way from New York to Chicago and to Nebraska where he was employed as a hired hand in the vicinity northwest of Fremont. We remember his telling how he helped cut ice on the Missouri River, the year of the blizzard of 1888, and how he swapped his fur overcoat for a gold watch with cousins John and Mads Dam who were going on west to seek their fortune. He never heard from them, but some 50 years later, descendants have been located in the Valentine and Gordon, Nebraska area. James C. then returned to his native land and married Marie Dam in 1893, and came back to America to establish their home. They spent two years on a farm in the Bluffs area northwest of Fremont which belonged to John Hendricksen. Here a daughter Emelie and a son Martin were born. Mr. Dam contacted typhoid fever and was very ill. Doctor Zellers drove his horse and buggy out from Hooper every day to attend him. It was a miracle he lived. Those were difficult weeks for his wife who could not speak English, but kind Danish neighbors helped her through it. They then moved to a farm in the Argo vicinity in Burt County and rented a farm for 9 years. Here their son Martin died of a rupured appendix at the age of 3 1/2 years. He is buried at West Admah Cemetery. Two more daughters were born, Anna and Emma. In 1905 they purched an 80 acre farm in Section 33 of Washington County, from Mrs. H. V. Hansen. Here a son Edwin was born in 1907. James C. Dam died in 1929. Edwin had taken over the farming at a early age due to his father's ill health. Edwin and his mother continued living on the farm until 1937 when he married the former Lucinda Busch, daughter of Fred and Orphia Busch of Hooper. Marie Dam then moved to a home in Hooper, purchased by her son, but now residing at the home farm place at the time of her death in 1938. Johnson said was apparently a self- inflicted gun wound. The circumstances were pieced together by Johnson as follows: Gerhardt had stopped his car on the Strand farm. Barton Magnuson, Uehling farmer who was mowing the fied, saw him and stopped the tractor to talk to him briefly at the edge of the field. Magnuson said Gerhardt had the shotgun and was "waving it around." Magnuson said he turned back to the tractor to resume the mowing when he heard the gun fire and turned to find Gerhardt on the ground, shot between the throad and left shoulder. Jonson said the jugular vein was severed and Gerhardt apparently died a few minutes later. The county attorney added there is a possibility the shot was accidental but the angle of the shotgun blast and other circumstances made him believe the shot was intentional. Deputy Couty Attorney Richard L. Kuhlman and Sheriff Pelham McGee assisted with the investigation. Gerhardt, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Gerhardt, was born June 5, 1910 at Western and was reared by Mr. and Mrs. Peter Larson of Uehling. Gerhardt married Anna Mallette Aug. 23, 1937, at Fremont. Hanson and his son, Christian, were hauling material for a bridge near the Daubert farm. They left Uehling with their loads of lumber, the son following, and were only half a mile out of town, north, when Hanson's horses became unmanagable in descending a hill. The driver in his efforts to gain control of the team fell, or was thrown in front of the wheels, which passed over his head, causing almost instant death. He was carried back to town and a doctor called, but nothing could be done to save him, the heavey load had crushed out his life. The 100th birthday anniversary was celebrated last December at the James P. Johnson home, the daughter with whom his declining days were spent. At that time the following outstanding events of 100 years of living a span of life rarely obtained, were chronicled in this newspaper. Mr. Jorgensen was born at Gerskov, Denmark, Dec. 4, 1843, where he lived until he was 57 years of age, working as a fireman on an entertainment boat and for a light plant. He was a veteran of the war between Denmark and Germany in 1864 and present war conditions often troubled his mind. He came with his family to this country in 1900 to join three sons already in Nebraska, settling in the Argo community where he opened and operated a blacksmith shop. Mr. and Mrs. Jorgensen celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1921 with all their seven children present. In 1926 they moved to Uehling where Mrs. Jorgensen passed away in 1934 at the age of 82, a son, Hans, dying a few years ago. The living children are Mrs. Marie Christensen of Uehling; John of Pascagoula, Miss.; Lars of Richmond, Calif.; Nels of Flager, Colo.; Mrs. Chris Nelson of Beatrice, and Mrs. Johnson of Swaburg. There are 31 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Mr. Jorgensen, though a man of small stature, enjoyed good health and the visits of relatives and friends until past his 100th year, though his advanced age had somewhat affected his sight and hearing. Funeral rites will be held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the Wollmer & Warne funeral home in Hooper and at 2:00 o'clock from the Congregational church in Uehling with Rev. Arthur Swanson of Oakland officiating. Interment will be in the Danish cemetery southeast of Uehling. Note: According to the LDS Family Search he was born at Gierskov, Odense, Fyn, Denmark. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Familien Jørgen Jørgensen/Maren Olesdatter -------------------------------------------------------------------- Mand: Jørgen Jørgensen Født: 19 dec 1797 i Gerskov, Skeby - Døbt: 4 feb 1798 i Skeby k - Konfirmeret: 1812 i Otterup - Død: 21 aug 1881 i Odense - Begravet: 29 aug 1881 i Skeby k - Stilling: boelsmand Gerskov, Skeby, Lunde, Odense - Jytte Sørensens ane nr: 52 Hans far: Jørgen Hansen - Hans mor: Birthe Marie Jørgensdatter Gift 22 jun 1832 i Norup k - Hustru: Maren Olesdatter Født: 21 sep 1806 i Roerslev, Nørre Næraa sogn - Døbt: 2 nov 1806 i Nr Næraa k - Konfirmeret: 1821 i Nr Næraa k - Død: 30 nov 1881 i Gerskov, Skeby - Begravet: 7 dec 1881 i Skeby k - Jytte Sørensens ane nr: 53 Hendes far: Ole Larsen - Hendes mor: Elisabeth Knudsdatter -------------------------------------------------------------------- Børn: Jørgen Jørgensen Født: 16 jul 1833 i Gerskov, Skeby sogn - Døbt: 15 sep 1833 i Skeby k - Konfirmeret - Død: 2 mar 1893 i Gerskov , Skeby - Stilling: husmand og fragtmand matr 15d Gerskov by - Jytte Sørensens ane nr: 26 Familier: Ane Katrine Andersen Ole Jørgensen Født: 28 feb 1835 i Gerskov, Skeby sogn , Odense - Døbt: 20 apr 1835 i Skeby k - Konfirmeret - Død: 19 jan1916 i Gersø, Skeby sogn, Odense - Stilling: husmand og fisker Gerskov og Gersø Mads Jørgensen Født: 28 mar 1837 i Gerskov, Skeby sogn - Døbt: 27 maj 1837 i Skeby k - Død: 22 okt 1844 i Gerskov - Begravet: 1844 i Skeby k Peter Christian Jørgensen Født: 24 feb 1839 i Gerskov, Skeby - Døbt: 18 mar 1839 i Gerskov - Død: 18 mar 1839 i Gerskov, Skeby - Begravet: 24 mar 1839 i Skeby k Hans Jørgensen Født: 11 mar 1840 i Gerskov, Skeby, Odense - Døbt: 16 maj 1840 i Skeby k - Konfirmeret: 15 apr 1855 i Skeby k - Død: efter er 1860 Peter Christian Jørgensen Født: 27 mar 1842 i Gerskov, Skeby - Døbt: 12 jun 1842 i Skeby k - Død: 26 dec 1842 i Gerskov, Skeby - Begravet: 1 jan 1843 i Skeby k Carl Christian Jørgensen Født: 4 dec 1843 i Gerskov, Odense - Døbt: 18 feb 1844 i Skeby k - Konfirmeret - Død: 7 jun 1944 i Fremont, Dodge, Ne USA - Begravet: 10 jun 1944 i Uehling, Dodge, Ne USA Elise Marie Jørgensen Født: 19 feb 1847 i Gerskov, Skeby - Døbt: 23 apr 1847 i Skeby k - Konfirmeret: 7 apr 1861 i Skeby k ![]()

Died - Lars Jorgenson of Swaburg has committed suicide by hanging. Note: Both of his wives are bured at the West Admah Cemetery. See the item, below by Randy Cordes, for more information concerning the grave of Lars. Lars Jorgensen was born in Sonder Jellinge, Hyllested parish, on Nov. 1, 1838 to farmowner Jorgen Olsen and wife Karen Madsdatter. Lars Jorgensen, 28, from Sonder Jellinge serving in Sterrede and Margrethe Andersdatter, 21, from Venslev were married in Venslev parish on June 9, 1865. Lars, 33 and Margrethe, 26 Jorgensen emigrated to the New York, USA on April 14, 1870 on the ship Ocean Queen with their daughter, Christine, 3 1/2. Children of Lars & Margrethe Jorgensen: 1. Mrs. Otto (Christine) Hansen (1865 > 4-25-1880) Buried St. Johannes, Argo 2. Mrs. Amos (Alma) Brodersen 3. Mrs. Rasmus (Agnes) Hendricksen Dodge and Washington County Lars Jorgensen Andrew and Mary (Hansen) Petersen, who had thirteen children, were the parents of my grandmother, Margrethe, who was born at Venslov, Soro County, Slagelse, Sjaelland, Denmark, on December 19, 1843, their fourth child and fourth girl. Grandpa also came from Denmark, and he was born February 1838. It is believed Grandma and Grandpa came to America about 1870 when her parents came. My Grandma’s oldest sister, Ane Olson, was the only member of the who stayed in Denmark. She was married, but they were childless. Her husband did not succumb to the “American Fever” like the rest of the sons-in-law. My grandparents were married in Denmark and the parents of one daughter born there in 1865. Aunt Christine, a young newcomer to America, later became Mrs. Otto Hansen. My grandparents were the parents of two other daughters born in America, namely; Mrs. Amos (Alma) Brodersen, and Mrs. Rasmus (Agnes) Hendrickson (my mother). They farmed near her parents who farmed in Washington County. Grandma died September 16, 1878, at only thirty-five years of age so I never knew her. My mother and aunt were not in school yet at the time. Grandma was the first of the Andrew Petersen children to die in their new country. There were three others (Maren Clausen, Johanna Mogensen Christiansen, and Sophia, a young child) to die before their parents and the 1900’s. Grandpa was married a second time to Louise who had a son of her own however, she died young in 1886 too. Both Grandma and Louise are buried with markers at the West Admah Cemetery. Grandpa had a crippled leg which made it hard for him to tend to his farm. The loss of his mates so young was also a further burden. It is presumed that it was in a fit of despair he put a halter around his neck and hanged himself in the barn. It is uncertain the date of his death, but I’m sure it was around the 1890’s. Because suicide was considered a such a gross sin in those days I’m not sure if he is buried with my Grandma or not. There is no marker indicating so. Today we put mental disorders with cancer, heart trouble, etc. as an illness. Certainly no one is condemned to hell with cancer! When a man’s heart has been made right (before despondency), we know that is what is important. I trust he had that rightness. Grandpa and Grandma have several great-grandchildren in the general area of Blair. Her sisters and brothers who lived in the area were Mrs. Hans (Karen) Fredricksen - widowed - Mrs. Christian (Noer) Andersen; Mrs. Christian (Maren) Clausen; Mrs. Peter ( Marie) Christainsen; Mrs. Louis (Stine) Johnson; Mrs. Nels (Johanna) Mogensen - widowed - Mrs. Paul Christiansen; Hans Christian Andersen; James Andersen, Lars Andersen, and John Andersen. Submitted by Mildred Enger - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Concerning the grave of Lars Jorgensen: Are you familiar with “Witching for Graves”? Just as it is possible for some people to witch for water, it is possible for some people to witch for persons, both those buried and those alive. I have the ability to witch for graves. It is also possible while witching, to determine the sex (male or female) of the person, whether living or deceased and in the ground. The human body emits an energy field or aura that causes two pieces of wire to react. I use two pieces of Number 9 wire bent to an “L” shape; I hold the short end of each wire in front of my chest (one in each hand) and walk toward a living person or walk over a grave. When I am next to a man (living) or standing above a man’s grave, the two pieces of wire cross in front of my chest. When next to a woman or over a woman’s grave, the wires go to the outside. Yes, when I first was told about witching (in early 1990’s), I thought the man was pulling my leg. I was skeptical until he showed me how it worked, and even more surprised when I found that I could get the same response. What does all this have to do with Lars Jorgensen. I believe he is buried next to his two wives, just to the south. There is no stone there for Lars. However, West Admah Cemetery records show that his cemetery plot included space for several more graves than just those occupied by Margrethe and Louise. When I “witched” the grave site just south of Margrethe and Louise, my witching wires indicated that a man was buried there. My research of microfilm of newspapers from 1901 reporting the death of Lars Jorgensen indicate that he was buried in the West Admah Cemetery. With that being the case, it is only logical to conclude that he was buried in the cemetery plot that he had paid for (I assume when Margrethe died in 1878). Note: Randy Cordes sent this information to me on Febuary 15, 2007. JORGENSEN, LARS ****************************************************************** Name = Louise Jorgensen wife of Lars Full Name = Louise Margretha Hansen Brodersen Hansen Jorgensen Dates on Tombstone = - 9-6-1886 Actual dates = 4-12-1836 - 9-6-1886 Buried in Lot 18 Spouse 1 = Hans Brodersen Spouse 2 = Tortner Niels Hansen (1867) Spouse 3 = Lars Jorgensen (1884) Maiden Name = Louise Margretha Hansen Parents = Hans & Karen Kirstine Hansen Her full name was LOUISE MARGRETHA (HANSEN) BRODERSEN / HANSEN /JORGENSEN. She was born on Tuesday, April 12, 1836, at the Bibyjard Farm, Borup, Denmark (20 miles southwest of Copenhagen). Her parents were HANS HANSEN and KAREN KIRSTINE (_____________) HANSEN. Louise was baptised on May 8, 1836, in Denmark; she was confirmed on July 23, 1850, in Denmark. The precise location of these two events is unknown. She was first married to HANS BRODERSEN, date unknown. It appears that Hans Brodersen died some time in 1867, but there is no confirmation to date (2007). Louise was married (2nd marriage) on Friday, April 5, 1867, to TORTNER NIELS HANSEN at Slotskirken in Copenhagen, Denmark. Her third marriage was to LARS JORGENSEN (see below). Louise’s 2nd husband, Tortner Niels Hansen, worked for the King of Denmark as a carpenter, night watchman, gatekeeper, and repairman; one of his duties was the lighting of the lamps each night at the King’s Palace. The Danish King at the time was King Christian IX, who reigned from 1863 to 1906. Louise was a seamstress, cook, and excelled in hand embroidery. She was also a servant for the Queen of Denmark. Tortner Niels Hansen died on Tuesday, September 13, 1881, from back injuries resulting from a fall; he was buried in Denmark (we assume in Copenhagen, but exact location is unknown). Louise had one son, WALTER ELIAS HANSEN; he was born on Friday, September 20, 1867, in Copenhagen, Denmark. It is unclear whether Hans Brodersen or Tortner Niels Hansen is Walter’s biological father. Louise was 4 months pregnant with Walter when she married Tortner. Unanswered questions include, “Did Hans Broderson die after Walter was conceived and then Louise married Tortner Niels Hansen?” It appears that this was the case. When my Aunt Melva Christensen (from Oakland, Nebraska) researched this issue a number of years ago, that was her impression, but was unable to find 100% confirmation. Following the death of Tortner Niels Hansen in 1881, Louise Hansen decided that she and her son, Walter Hansen, should immigrate to the United States. They departed from Copenhagen on October 14, 1882, aboard the Steamer “Hekla.” Walter was 15 years old at the time; his mother, Louise, was 46 years of age. New York City was their port of arrival on or about November 4, 1882. They traveled by rail to Oakland, Nebraska, to live with relatives, Rasmus and Marie Petersen, Walter’s aunt and uncle. The Petersen’s farm from Oakland was 1 mile east, 10 miles south, 1 mile east, and ½ mile south. The Petersen farm adjoined the Jens Jensen farm, where Walter’s future wife, Anna Jensen, was living; Anna was 10 years of age when Louise and Walter moved onto the neighboring farm. After 1½ years in Nebraska and the United States, Louise was remarried to LARS JORGENSEN; the wedding was held on Tuesday, May 13, 1884, in Washington County, Nebraska. This was a 2nd marriage for Lars and a 3rd marriage for Louise. Louise died on Monday, September 6, 1886, in Burt County, Nebraska; the cause of death is unknown. She was buried at the West Admah Cemetery in Lars Jorgensen’s cemetery plot. Note: There is one gravestone for both of Lars Jorgensen’s wives; his first wife, Margrethe was buried on the east side of the stone; Louise was buried on the west side of the stone.
