Some Lohr and Fortun Families of Southern Wisconsin & Northern Illinois
UPDATE: Please click to visit my NEW Website
You will find that the majority of families covered on this website arrived in Wisconsin between 1848 and 1865. While the Lohr and Greiner families immigrated from the German speaking areas of Austria, Baden, Luxembourg, Prussia and Pommerania, the Fortun and Bean families were predominantly from the Sogn og Fjordane area of Norway.
Once in Wisconsin, these families included a preacher, a taylor, a doctor, a saloon keeper, several cigar makers and stone masons, and many farmers. They homesteaded the Wisconsin frontiers of rural Crawford, Dodge, Vernon & Washington counties, and helped settle what was then a small village called Madison. They were integral members in establishing two Lutheran churches and one rural telephone cooperative. They were veterans from the Civil War through the Korean conflict, and included a member of John Phillip Sousa's WWI Marching Band. They were Norske and Deutscher, lutefisk and herring, Lutheran and Catholic.
This site is especially dedicated to my late grandfather, Howard Greiner, who taught me that one grandpa is more than enough in this world.
