From the book "Unruly Women" by Victoria E Bynum:

Wesleyan Methodism had special appeal in more rural areas of the Piedmont, where camp meetings often replaced formal worship and many people had few ties to slavery. In northeastern Montgomery County, several families linked to each other through generations of intermarriage and landownership prayed regularly with McBride's partner, Reverend Adam Crooks. William B. Hurley and his wife Frances Hulin Hurley, were so moved by their conversation to Wesleyanism that they named a son born in 1854 after Jesse McBride.

Secret prayer meetings, conducted with approximately thirty members of the Lovejoy community, began shortly after Orrin Hulin, the father of Frances Hurley, and his brother Hiram reported to Crooks that certain planters of their community had committed outrages against slaves.

The reactions of the state's proslavery majority to the growth of Wesleyan Methodism attested to the movement's importance. On June 15, 1851, when Adam Crooks tried to denounce slavery publicly before the entire congregation of Lovejoy Chapel in Montgomery County, appoximatley one hundred proslavery citizens mobbed and jailed him and ultimatel ran him out of the county. Only the protection provided by several members of the Hulin, Moore and Hurley families prevented physical harm to Crooks when the mob forced him from the pulpit to the county jail in Troy.

As the disloyal grew in numbers and boldness, efforts by state and local Confederate leaders to regain control over communities became more desperate. It seemed that no one knew whom to trust, but one thing was certain: the most outspoken Unionists in Montgomery County had long been the devoutly Wesleyan Hulin and Moore families. Long before the war, family patriarchs Hiram Hulin and Valentine Moore had expressed their antislavery views and passed those views onto their children, who intermarried. Two of Hulin's sons had deserted the Confederate army and participated in at least one raid on their Confederate neighbors. At least one of his sons (and perhaps two) refused to elist in the army.

In the month following the divisive electon of 1864, mobs of Condederate neighbors and former magistrates twice ransacked the home of Hiram Hulin and his second wife, Candace Beaman Hulin.. The next month, a Home Guard soldier assaulted Hulin's daughter-in-law Caroline Hulin. Harrassment of the family continued until unidentified assailants captured Jesse, John and William Hulin on January 27th, 1865, tied them down in a cold basement until the following morning, and shot them to death.

Hiram married (1) Nancy. Nancy was born in 1807 in NC. She died before 1860.

Hiram married again in 1860. Nancy wasn't listed as his wife in 1860, Candase Beaman was his wife in 1860.

Unruly Women by Victoria E Bynum.

" The support of wives and mothers undoubtedly made desertion more feasible for men, but it also demanded from women behavior well beyond the traditional duties of their sphere. In Montgomery County, devout Wesleyans Elisha Moore and Jesse Hulin lived in the woods surrounding their community after refusing to enlist in the Confederate army. The men were married to each other's sisters, Sarah Moore and Caroline Hulin, who traveled different routes each time to visit their husbands, taking care not to leave trails of broken twigs or overturned stones. When Elisha Moore contracted pneumonia, his wife and sister nursed him back to health by fashioning him a bed with leaves and blankets and by carrying to him special teas kept hot in iron kettles, aling with the usual food.

Jessie married3 Caroline MOORE daughter of Valentine MOORE and Lucy HALTOM on 24 Dec 1855 in Montgomery Co, NC.

Unruly Women by Victoria E Bynum:

"In neighboring Montgomery County, Caroline Moore, the daughter of farmer and blacksmith Valentine Moore, defected from the Methodist Episcopal church to protest the mobbing of Reverend Crooks. She soon married Jesse Hulin, another Wesleyan convert and the son of Hiram Hulin, one of Crooks staunches defenders.
